I'm hoping to go to a show next Monday, its nothing huge just a local one to start me off and see if he can get over his excitement (he's bucked me off 3 times now when going out in different places). However today I had a practice in the field with trotting as I thought this would be the main issue but we found another little one thats hopefully nothing major!
At home he obviously doesn't like trotting away from his mates so I'm going to carry a whip (though he'll probably be more lively). However when turning around and coming back he flattens his ears back and at first tried to bite/turn his quarters. Otherwise he was more forward (a little bit too much at one point!!).

Is there any set way to stop him biting me apart from practice? I know people use their canes/whips when showing to stop the horse stepping across you by just holding it in front of the horse's face.

Thanks!!

P.S All he's done was a bit of cubbing, XC schooling and some local events so it isn't as if he's never seen anything, but I don't think he's done any in hand by the looks of it. He hadn't been out in about 5 months but went out 2 weeks after the first incident of bucking me off and still continued to do so. He's also just coming 6 so maybe getting it out of his system?
