We are nearing the end of the road with my bitch and she will sadly be PTS in the next few days :( That will leave me with my 5yr old working bred whippet, entire dog. We are looking to get another puppy and provisionally have a pup booked for 8 weeks time.

Dylan has the loveliest sunny nature and gets on with every dog hes ever met. Hes such a lovely guy hes done work with dog aggressive dogs, nothing phases him :) He also spent 3 months when I was in hospital, living with friends with their 2 dulux dog bitches and a tiny shih tzu puppy. No issues with any of them, and the 2 dulux dogs were bat ***** mental, border line dog aggressive lunatics!

But I'm wondering about whether to get a dog or bitch puppy? As I said, hes a lovely, lovely, natured dog, but he will almost certainly, once hes over the new dog excitement, get a bit of a strop on. The strop will involve sulking and puffing his cheeks out a lot and almost certainly nothing else. Hes prone to being a bit of a dramatic princess! I have plans in place to manage this and I am in the lucky position that they wont ever be left alone as I work opposing shifts to my OH, but if choosing one sex or the other will help them get on long term then thats what I'll do.

I am very keen not to neuter. If we get a bitch then that will be done once we get to the 18 month point, obviously keeping them separate as needs be before that, but if I got a dog I'd really, really rather not unless there were no other options. I dont really want to get into why I feel that way on this post :)

Is there any reason to lean one way or another? Or can I just view the pups and pick the one whose temperament I like the most? I know exactly what I am looking for in a pup and the litter should hopefully all be pretty much what I want, but obviously this is a massive decision to make and I've never introduced a pup to an established adult dog! So any and all advice gratefully accepted :)

in your situation i would go for a dog and then you wont have to be on alert all of the time...if you are sure your boy will accept a dog in the house that sounds like the most sensible solution. when i was looking for another i had a neutered female and decided after reading lots of info to go for a dog..there were 4 dogs and 1 bitch in the litter..guess which one chose me....luckily both bitches get on really well but sometimes the best plans go wrong....good luck.

He lives with a neutered bitch at the minute. I got her off death row at the pound and she is the loveliest, best behaved dog I have EVER met. But shes also a bit mental! We call her Bitches as she loves people but hates EVERY dog she ever meets! They get along ok, but its always been a bit of an uneasy truce and he tiptoes round her and her issues a lot. And thats what I'm trying to avoid this time. I'd like to have 2 dogs that get along and will enjoy each others company. He loves other dogs so very much I feel a little bit like he has been deprived by me rescuing Bitches, who is a bit mental even on her best day :(

Sex won't dictate how they get on, to be honest. Just choose the pup that you feel is the best and work from there. Two boys could fight, or could be totally in love. A dog and bitch could be in love, or could hate eachother. Ive had dogs, bitches, entires etc etc - the state of neuter has never dictated how they have cooperated.

I would only ever have boys, just personal preference. My lot all get on brilliantly and I couldn't stand the whole season thing or having to separate them or Dylan trying to hump.

Have you thought about a breed?

I have an entire lurcher who is totally non aggressive and very civilised. With hindsight I realise he was always more relaxed around the foster bitches we had than around the male ones. He is noticeably more outgoing and fun loving now he lives with two bitches. That is my only experience so may not apply to other male dogs of course.

yup, a whippety lurcher of course  I've got a pup booked from a litter that was born a couple of days ago. Working bred, mainly whippet but a little bit chunkier and not quite as neurotic and needy as Dylan. Very similar to my current bitch. Only difference this time is I'm going for a blue one :)

Firstly, I am sorry to hear about your old bitch :( It is always such a heartbreaking decision to make, but it sounds like she is ready to go, which does ease the anguish somewhat.

In terms of your next puppy, I would also say another dog. If your current boy is good natured with both sexes, then choosing a boy saves on any hassle when a bitch is in-season and then the worry over spaying etc.

I will be getting a puppy next year (if all goes to plan) and I did hum and haw over the decision about dog versus bitch, but I have decided that I prefer dogs for many reasons and I have had mixed sexes and single sexes before without any major issues before.

Look forward to seeing pictures :)
