Evening...

So my disgruntled fat, hairy, pig-pony has been having a shock this week with an unwanted apperance of the lunge line!! He's a quick learner so after our first session he mastered the general idea of moving around me in a circle-ish shape to my voice and whip commands. He learn't that leaping and lunging didn't work and worse still napping for Vada to save him wouldn't stop this nasty lady either. We're on session four now and he's happily walking and troting on the lunge with alittle encouragement of the whip. The trouble with Jesse is he is not sacred nor borthered by of ANYTHING which makes the use of a lunge whip very unaffective. I don't hold back with it either and I am certianly not affard to give him a whip; I'd rather he learnt to think forwards now then later. He is only three so I think he's just finding it alittle hard as he won't have super muscles developed yet.

Today I tried to ask for a canter and all I can say is I was far more nackered by the end of the session then Jesse!! After alot of chasing, a very quick trot might brake into a stride or two of canter if I was lucky but not quite long enough to praise him enough so he could understand that is what I'm after. He was just very confused and unsure of wha tI was asking. It's not ideal being in a paddock because I'm trying to pull him round while pushing him forward which means I have to have him quite short. I do have a smaller 'grass school' fenced area but the horses are currently grazing it down as it got knee lenght while I was away!!

Now in the poll is what my thoughts but I'd be really interested to hear any experience, advice and opinions. Please don't think I'm a complete numpty badly braking some poor pony, I have broken my fair share it's just not had one that's not cantered easily on the lunge nor backed many with such basic facilites. I only plan to lightly back Jesse while I have the time.

THANKIES XX

Lunging is quite hard work, especially as he is still so young. I wouldnt push him too much, let him get stronger and find his own balance and eventually he'll learn to canter on the lunge.

Can i have chocolate chip cookies please?!

He may not be weak and weedy but is muscles are not used to being worked and lunging is strenuous on any horse let alone an unbacked 3 year old. He's a lovely boy, just take it slow with him, he looks like he'lll be a cracker when he is up and running

i think he is probably abit unbalanced to canter on a cirlce just yet, it will come with time. i would stick with walk and trot at the mo.

how about....Carry on backing him just in walk and trot until your school field is ready (weeks) and get him cantering away from the whip and voice command loose

As others have said stick to walk and trot for a bit and then when your school is ready move on to canter loose first and then on a lunge. My coblet took ages to learn how to canter - well in the school and on a circle

- can go in a straight line on a hack no probs!!

Exactly, none of our horses were ever cantered on the lunge while they were being backed, in fact they werent cantered on the lunge ever...they were taught to canter while being ridden, the majority of the time out hacking and that was after a good couple of months of ridden work

I find the key to teaching them canter is for them to recognise the voice command 'CAN-TER'

whilst some energetic chasing. They soon click on, well my two did (as you can see in my siggy).

Edited to say I didn't teach them till they were 4.

Thankies : ) Your all right. I'll just stick to walk and trot for the moment. Need to teach him to long rein yet and start working on a mouth so plenty to teach him without canter.

*FMN gets busy baking*

What a smashing looking young horse. I wouldnt worry about it or make it become an issue, stick to W&T and see what happens....good luck
