Just wondered really , why or how do horses get cast? Iv'e never actually witnessed it happening but have heard of a few horses doing it in their stables.
If they are rolling and go all the way over , but are too close to the wall, their legs can get stuck, so that thye can't roll down either way. Usually they manage to kick themselves away from the wall, but sometimes you have to give them a helping hand.
it's when they try to roll over but are too close to the wall. if they're far enough away to stretch their legs out, they can get up, but if their legs are hard up against the bottom of the wall, or right up in the air, they're stuck.
i worked on a yard where one huge hunter got cast every single night. like a new definition of horsey stupidity. luckily he belonged to a vet!
the smart ones only do it once, honestly. my old eventer, prob the cleverest horse i've ever known, got cast as a 5 yr old. i had to get the guy delivering the newspaper to help me! the horse never did it again...
my horse got cast about three weeks ago, panicked and went ,mental in the middle of the might i went down at 5.30 am and she had gashed her head, grazed her sides cut her leg and got a hole in her head....pretty horrific! she is in a 20 foot by 15 foot stable as well!!!

I saw a horrible accident at Dabbs a while ago. I was down visiting my Mum and went along with her to watch for something to do. Lady was jumping and Horse fell on landing. Ended up with lady trapped underneath Horse, between it's front legs on her back, facing its belly and the Horse couldn't get up (cast but not in the standard way). People were pulling the Horse reins...I was amazed, like that would work!! Also trying to pull the lady out. I shouted at someone to get me a rope but no-one listened (I didn't know the place so didn't know where I'd get one). In the end I risked it, leaned over the Horse, grabbed its furthest back leg and hauled it over. Had to yell for for someone to grab his other leg once I'd got him halfway - big Horse and I'm not very big myself!! Quite scary as it was BSJA and no-one seemed to know what to do.
If it ever happens and they can't uncast themselves you need to get a long rope, loop it round the back leg that's next to the wall (or furthest from you) and pull them over. You must do it with the back legs. Be carefull though, easy to get kicked. Sheep get cast in the middle of fields on their backs.

her head is better, as the vet said it is the quickest part of the body to get better, luckily no damage to the ey...however the legs have caused one hell of a problem and still causing probs now...vet is coming on monday!
