A friend of mine is a teacher in Egypt ((the same friend that is involved with ACES) she is home till third of January))

the school is for ex pats but is surrounded by poor villages, the kids in these villages have nothing, little in the way of clothing etc, my friend Julie has encouraged the school kids to stay behind at the end of the day to spend some time teaching the kids from the villages English as it helps their prospects in the work place. However these kids need clothes the weather out there has been particularly bad and most local kids don't have any shoes let alone warm clothes.

I have approached the local swimming pool and leisure centre to ask if they would donate kids clothes from lost property, does anyone have any other ideas or anything they want to donate?

school equipment, pens pencils crayons etc would be welcome too

We visited a nursery on a township in SA last year, they were delighted when we left the students flip charts, pens pencils etc. They asked for us to bring warm clothes for the kids so we are doing that this year too. Remember you have to get the stuff out there so excess baggage or postage can soon run up the costs, may work out cheaper to get donations and buy stuff out there?

as Julie is so involved with ACES and so many of the teachers are from the UK getting a reasonable amount over there is currently not a problem, if we had enough for it to be we would be wearing massive smiles and raising funds to get them there, but I do get your point and hope it is one we need to consider in the future

Cash donations, buy the clothes out there. No transport costs, no sorting out the rubbish that is only fit for rags, the clothes will be climate appropriate & you will give a boost to local businesses thereby providing families with an income.

It is much easier to get people over here to donate clothes and shoes than it is cash and there is no network out there currently to do the buying, it is one friend who works in a school trying to handout clothes/shoes to the local kids who don't have any-in time it may become more but for now that is what there is to work with.

climate appropriate clothes-they have had snow out there this week and they have rain and heat too, it is cold at night for much of the year so clothes from the UK would be appropriate.

I am happy to sort clothes but I am here not there

I know we were told not to send cases of clothes to SA as Customs will not always allow them through. Not sure if this will be the case for Egypt.

I would be happy to help where I can. My 3 kids go to three different schools, lower, middle and upper. I am sure that the head teachers would allow a note home to students appealing for clothes, stationary etc. Let me know how I can help as I would probably need more info or letter from the school on headed notepaper to back up the request.
Having been to Egypt and seeing the poverty in some areas (Edfu in particular) I would be more than willing to help. Its the logistics of getting the items there that may prove to be the biggest headache but if you have a solution thats great.

they go out with people traveling, Ace so yes there is a limit to what can go but if we can get some stuff together then we can get it out as people travel to and fro, a lot of the staff are from the Europe and family travel to and fro too, so it will take some juggling but can be done.
It used to be the case with Egypt that lots of items just vanished going through customs but it does not happen so frequently now, a lot of it goes in hand luggage too.

Will speak to Julie about getting something together that looks a bit more official when I see her over Christmas, as I agree it is much easier to get people on board then. Will keep you updated
