Having just spent nearly a thousand pounds putting half my garden to astro-turf , partly because of the mud last winter and the fact the dogs wouldn't go toilet on the patio , i'm in a muddle now as I have seeded the remaining lawn and fenced it off , so the dogs are only on the patio and astro-turf , but they still just stand at the fence trying to get through to the proper lawn , how can I encourage them to use the fake grass ? have even thought of putting some other dog's poo on there , welcome any idea's please :)

PMSL! Dogs!! No ideas (I will have a think) but my fella will only go on grass, now he is an adult he will hold it all day rather than go on concrete/in his run. Which means I have to take gazillions of bags out every night!!
Dunno if he would go on astro turf or not.

Planting a poo might work? B only poos in her poo areas in the garden, we tend to do a pick up session every 2 or 3 days and she spends ages sniffing for the remanants of a poop before she will do one!

Shelties have all 'been' on the astro-turf this morning but the 2 border collies are still hanging on , doesn't surprise me as the collies would never go in the house but the shelties can be mucky little ******s and don't worry about wether it's wrong or not , the poo stand off will continue , didn't lose blood sweat and tears last week shifting 10 tonnes of turf and sharp sand just to give in and let them on the grass !!:D

Only give your dog access to astro turf and patio to poo, don't be tempted to let him go on the grass or he'll just learn to hold it until he gets on the lawn. At some point they will need to go, so pop him out regularly and give him a short time in the garden to go (no more than 5 mins). When your dog does poo, treat and give loads of praise. Keep this up for a few weeks and they should learn to adjust. In the meantime do not give your dog free access to the garden as you are effectively retraining him to go to toilet on the astro turf.

Dogs are far more adaptable than we give them credit for, and having seen dogs go from pooing on grass to pooing on concrete, (and one from grass to astro turf) they certainly can do it, they just need a bit re educating and perseverance :)
