My boy's 20 this year, and for the last however many years, (even with previous owner) he can't get down to roll properly, he has his whole body checked regularly.. When he's down he flips right over a number of times, wriggling around and he gets up normally too... Does anyone else's horse do the same? Or anyone have any possible reasons for this? Thanks

It could be mental, not physical. A lot of horses (esp. those with narcolepsy) will not go down, however much they want to, because they feel vulnerable - for whatever reason.

Are there any situations in which he will go down to roll more easily (like softer or harder ground, in a deeply bedded loose box, with or without companions nearby?)

I think the main thing is that he DOES stil roll, and I bet he enjoys it when he does!
