My OH has taken on a fabulous 18yr old Welsh D from his aunt who has known the pony through her clients for most of his life. He's still very well and full of beans, having had a varied life on many pony club national teams.

He's currently not doing a great deal, he's in the field with our others, but my OHs aunt wants the pony to get out and about doing things whilst he's still very well. Trouble is my OH works a lot, and has another horse to ride too, so the pony tends to not get much work.

The plan is to do a bit of cubbing with him, but how to get him fit when OH doesn't have time to ride him often? I would but I'm too heavy for him for anything other than a walkabout....

So, how fit does ones pony have to be to do a bit of cubbing? (I've never been before!).

You need to be reasonably fit for cubbing- if you can do a varied pace 2 hour hack then thats a good benchmark. I have 4 to get fit so i ride and lead which allows me to get all 4 worked in half the time- i think that would be an ideal solution. you have to work out who is best to lead as some can be b#ggers...

Yes ride and lead if you can, but also walk work wil help with there endurance fitness so of you could walk him for an hour when ever you can ride him this would really help!! Alot of hunt horses get six weeks walkin work, my spotty pony is just startin her walk work, alltho v busy this week so done a bit and now having another week off, she will prop get 3 weeks walk work, depending on how she is goin and how calm she decides to stay!!
