Getting from A to B

This is a nosy post but am coming around to the conclusion that some form of transport is probably required if I am going to do all the things with my new lad that I would like too! Its not really so much the question 4x4 or lorry but how to afford such an item and how do other people go about it? Do you finance it with a lorry company? Get a bank loan and buy something? Or just wait until you have saved up enough pennies? Use your tow vehicle as your main car? Or have a vehicle that you just use for towing? Hire a trailer? Buy a trailer? Or like me at the moment, just hope and pray that somebody is going in the kind of direction you are and you can get a lift?

I would be interested in people's responses, perhaps someone could suggest something I haven't thought of. Thanks
 
We have a 4x4 and trailer, both bought cash. The 4x4 is a Terrano and not horrific on the fuel but is solely a tow vehicle as I refuse to use it as the every day car for the 20,000 non-horse miles we do a year! We run 2 fiestas as our every day cars. The fiesta Econetic we've just got does 76 mpg and is zero tax.
 
I have to hack shows as although it wouldn't take me long to save up to buy a 2nd hand trailer, we can't afford the running costs of a 4x4 thanks to stupid fuel prices and high car taxes on them plus my OH refuses to tow. He says that our next car will be a Prius anyways so that is transportation out of the question for me!!

My new YO said that he may be able to bring me to some shows this summer so hopefully this will happen or failing that, it's setting off at 4:30 am to hack the 11 miles to the show I would like to attend this year. Thank goodness my TB is fit!
 
I have a Ford Ranger for towing and every day car, I was tempted to get a cheap runaround and a little lorry, but, couldn't justify a lorry AND a car, hubby has an Audi A4 and a motorbike
 
I have 3 cars and tow with my Subaru estate which is the stables and dog car ( although I love it and usually drive this). I get awful fuel consumption because it's a twin turbo! Contemplating selling my fiat so can buy a fourtrack or something.
 
I have a VERY, VERY old transit with a box on the back. I used my savings to buy it, was around £3000. I got it fixed to a standard to use. The thing with the old boxes is they were made to last and the box bit is no doubt older then me. I do spend quite a bit to keep it on the road and safe but it is worth EVERY penny. As I am on my own, having the chance to get out and about is important. i pay for everything myself, ford is a good make as parts are cheap!
There are cheap boxes out there you just can't be picky.
i stick to stuff within 20 miles of home so not to put to much strain on box.
It was a bit ropey at the end of last year, it seems by prop shaft was not bolted squarley to my dip flang!!!( what ever)
I would much rather have horse transport then go on holiday, anytime!!
 
I saved up! :)

Only got an old cheapy lorry off ebay, but I saved for it, took me about 2 years after I got my coblet. I don't "do" credit (mortgage aside) so loan etc not an option for me. I know lots of people do but I prefer to save.

I only do local journeys as lucky to have a number of large venues within about 15 miles, so old is fine for us. Obviously I'd love a shiny new conversion but my L reg gets me where I want to go, albeit slowly :D

May switch to 4x4 and trailer when I can afford to change my car, but would need to do B+E test first and that puts me off, as does running costs of 4x4 as do a lot of miles and my current car is very economical.
 
I bought my trailer with cash. I use my friend's mum's company 4x4 to tow (she isn't just my friends mum, I loaned and then bought her horse so I do know her and she likes to see him go out) but will try and buy a reasonable 4x4 this summer for myself. Will probably just pay cash and save for it as won't be looking to spend huge amounts of money. Not more than 4K or so.
I won't be using it as my main car I hope as OH should have a company car by then and so I can run his Ibiza about and give my little brother back his Fiesta which I currently have. So all a bit complicated but basically yep, I'm just going to buy it all outright. I paid £1000 for towing lessons last year out right too.

Should add that it has taken me 4 years to get this far so I'm putting in the graft and doing my time! I was over the moon to be able to take my friend's horse to Rossdale's yesterday in my own trailer. It was insanely exciting. I have decided that I want it serviced before I do too many miles though so it's about to cost me more than it already cost me to buy. These horse things are damn expensive :rolleyes:
