getting me fit... what's good?

Desperately need to get fit for riding as am completely rubbish after a few years of being a happy (and clearly lazy!) hacker...

expect will not make round sj course in current state without oxygen!

Anyway - have started cycling to work as a first attempt...

Anyone got any good suggestions for what exercise is good for building up riding type muscles/ fitness? Am only able to ride at weekends at the mo you see

Boxercise is great form of exercise, works cardio and also strengthens your muscles. Stability balls are good for building up your core muscles. Skipping is a very good form of cardio workout. Failing that get a workout DVD
 
Scew all the gym and yoga... jogging for min of 20mins each day at a regular speed is a good goal. Cycling was a good idea. Why not get fit on your horses back? Even when hacking rising trot for 1/2mile should do the trick. Build up the amount of schooling and jumping you do. Show jumping is hard because you need stamina.
 
I agree! Much prefer to ride to get fit - but only riding at weekends hampers that a bit....

I've been doing bits of SJ and is hard work - think I might also be holding my breath - which also unhelpful!

Definately doing the cycling. am a bit phobic about running - but know it is good exercise!
 
Running is the best & cheapest form of exercise ! No special equipment needed (just some decent trainers), no travel to the gym etc ... but can be horribly difficult to motivate yourself to go out on a cold and blustery evening (like tonight).
Start by running one minute, walking 30 seconds, running one minute etc, you build up the stamina really quickly. Easier if you can persuade a friend to go with you!

I do believe you have to get fit to ride rather than ride to get fit (unless you ride lots of horses every day). This is one of my main aims for 2007 - I used to be really fit but feel like a big blob at the mo

Oh and movative your self with running along tomusic nothing works better then some decent club music! Oh i also find if there are people/cars about im less likely to go slow or stop!
