my jack Russell is not good at retrieve either she will do it a couple of times but gets bored really quickly, she much prefers to be chased with the item so I will watch this thread with interest, maybe it's a jrt thing.
The retrieve begins with the hold and present. If you can get him to mouth a toy, then hold it, then give it to you by shaping and reinforcing you have the basis. Then, all you need to do is throw the toy a little way - to get hold and present it he has got to go and fetch it!
The basic retrieve has about 12 or 13 different elements.
Agree that I start with the hold/present in front and then work backwards.
You can also teach it with two objects, the game only continues and the second item is thrown when the first item is brought back and released.
