Getting past horses in fields whilst out hacking..

I need some advice :-D ^ ^ as the title says really, whilst hacking my young boy gets very excited going past horses in fields (nothing else phases him at all he is near perfect UNTILL the dreaded horses in the field (he is riggy and on rigcalm) he will peacock himself up and prance like a stallion there is no shifting him past them he loses his head completely there's nothing I can do to wake him up out of it really but once I've got him past though eventually he trumpets and I mean trumpets!! he whales the entire time till more horses then he'll try to bolt to them prance again.. these are geldings he's doing this aswell as mares so it can't just be a rig thing unless he's a bisexual rig lol .??. he is super friendly though, loves other horses and thinks they all want to be his best friend... but it's making me lose my nerve big time I don't wanna take him out incase I see another horse out... any advice or something I'm doing wrong I'd appreciate your input :-) thanks for reading!! x
 
does he do it in company as well.
If so the only thing I can suggest is to get someone VERY experienced to try hacking him

It is not going to be an easy thing to cure though. If they are just young and green it can be bad enough but as it the rig side of him coming out, it will be harder.

Do praise every little good bit he may do
 
Can you hack out in (calm) company for a while? So it isn't a case of all alone/with others in fields. More 'I'm out for a hack with my friend, oh, look, there are a few more/now there aren't'.
 
I will try tickles, and get back to you both about how he was with it, he has a good buddy that calms him riding in the field so it may work.. though it may really not work too haha! xx
 
I have had this with mine in the past and it starts being silly when the heads pop over the hedge or the other horses start running. And if its on a country tarmac lane not funny.

I agree go out with someone with a calm horse and keep moving forward to get on with the job in hand(easier said than done). If need be keep them between your horse and the horses the other sides.

If you can do this a few times then swap over gradually. etc etc

Mine got use to going by in the end ie it all got familiar and boring in the end but it took a while. I had the same with the horse eating cows too!
 
I ride an old cob who is generally very safe, he does get very excited when he sees other horses and makes himself 2 hands higher! We also see alot of red deer in the woods, and he gets very very silly with them! but saying that he listens to me and moves on... Not sure there is anything you can do really, if they are excited then they are excited!

If hes trying to bolt etc, it all comes down to schooling and and manners, its alright for him to get big and prance, but anything else is bad manners, he needs to learn leg means move forward and get on with your job!
 
Shy did this when we first started out together, and he was pretty scary. But now he's settled down to just being such a nice, friendly chap, as long as I let him stand and say a full hello ;)

I think if you can get out in company, fab. Horsey politics were high on the agenda at our yard the other day, as there were some re-shuffles, and that was the day I picked to try going bitless - Not my best move !! hahaha !! :eek:

It will settle down.

Mine goes on silly like that, he also does it for bullocks!
I find trotting past them helps, doesn;t give him chance to start gooning around. Totally ignore them and ride positively past. The more you do it the better he will get, it will just take a while.
