Well not the knees, just the scabs.

Pony had quite thick scabs behind his knees - I think a remnant of having mites. He's been dectomaxed (last 2 Autumns) and hasn't chewed his legs or stamped or been really itchy for over a year (got mildly itchy around last Sept but was dectomaxed within a week which stopped that).

The scabs seem to always be there, sometimes they are less but recently they have become more. He's a native so there's lots of hair there - I've chopped it all off the backs of his knees twice over winter which has helped get to the scabs but they still haven't gone.

Any ideas about something to get rid of them, I almost feel I need something that will soften them up a bit?

Thanks

:)

There are two shampoos called selsun and maloseb (sp) and they work really well for my ponies knees. However warm water and a metal comb also work well, heating and soaking the scabs then picking them out. Good luck

Each to their own but when I got my mare her previous owners used to brush the scabs out and it made her extremely sore. My mare has a chronic skin infection (not mites) and vet has recommended treatment with fuciderm (another cob on the yard is treated with malaseb). I use vaseline on alternate days to soften the scabs and then they just come off without hurting when you rub slightly.

There was someone on here (can't remember name but sent me a great PM) with some details of treatments they used, have yet to get myself sorted to get the ingredients but might actually do that now!

I use malaseb shampoo occasionally. You can buy this off the Internet, and every other day I use hoof to heal cream, it was recommended on here and within a couple of days the scabs had cleared up. I was at my wits end with it but now it's so easy keeps his legs nice and soft and hey presto no scabs!!
