Hello all,

2017 is fast approaching, and with Forest actually starting not to be a numpty and and me deciding to put my brave pants on and get on with it I have decided we are going to actually going to get out competing properly this year with a view to doing a BE80 by the end of the year.

My main question is where to start, our most local venue is holding an Arena Event and then an ODE 2 weeks later in April. I can't do both and am new to competing so want to go out and do something that will set us both up confidently, despite it being easier than what we are capable of.

Arena event - starter series - BE90 Dr test, this is our strong point, and then SJ and XC fences a max of 60cm. There is a middle series with a BE100 test and 75cm course but I feel we should start small. Horse prefers to jump outside and is less wimpy but is more measured and careful inside.

ODE - same venue, classes for XC are 50cm upwards. Have been cross country schooling not on that course.

This would be my first attempt at either event and I might be going on my own. We've been out to some clinics together now and will be going to dressage solo in Jan and I plan to get some more clinics in.

So advice and opinions please, which should I choose? Or is it much of a muchness?

Personally i prefer acctual XC rather than arena XC so that would be the decider for me, i think its much spookier and the horses don't get that bowling along confidence that they do XC.

Have you done each phase separately before? But you've go plenty of time between now and march to have a go XC schooling/ hunter trials and see how it goes - could you school round the course before deciding?

We've been round the XC at the venue before, and he enjoyed it. He's quite spooky/pathetic indoors when jumping so perhaps actual XC might be better at the ODE.

He's competed in Dressage and SJ out and about but we've only been schooling XC wise.
