Reckitt's Blue... that and I've heard people use vanish on the ends...

I've used net curtain whitener on my boy's and if definitely makes a difference (though not sparkling white yet!). I think you have to work on it, washing regularly with something to slowly get the stains outs, and then it should eventually come up white.

Supreme have a new shampoo for it that's meant to be good but I haven't tried it yet.

I use a washing regime of 1) normal shampoo (cheap stuff), 2) Diamond white, 3) blue mixture (tresemme, fairy liquid, vanish, excel gel and equine blue as suggested to me by Theresa_f) and this seems to bring it up pretty well :)

I have found that keeping the tail well conditioned closes the cuticle on the hair and stops it absorbing the stain in the first place.
The best thing I found was Stardrops and soft soap as used by the Shire people- but you do need to condition the hair after.

i have the same prob it sooo annoying!! and i couldnt find any coat whitener at gatcombe today! what has the world come to lol

I used to wash the bottom of the tail in Daz, rinse very well and then use conditioner (a pale one, cheap from supermarket) and leave that to soak in for 20 minutes before washing off - this would help keep the worst off till next time.

I also use washing powder or liquid works really well! I find that combing baby oil through tail also helps to keep the dirt off.

My boy's tail is almost silver and gets dirty really quickly. I've never used anything other than baby bath on it and that brings it up beautifully. I have to wash it at least twice, making sure I use plenty of elbow grease on it, but after two washes, it's usually sparkling.
I work the baby bath into his tail really well and scrub it for ages before rinsing, then repeat the process. Using hot water is better than cold as well. Works out much cheaper. :)

The blue tesco bath foam. Never known anything to get a coloured one so white and shiny. Get the water nice and warm and pour a good amount in there to get a nice foam, then scrub and scrub! Then rinse thoroughly and spray with some Mr Sheen :p xx

But a yellow tail on a gelding is different to a yellow tail on a mare......

Mare's with full tails can't help but pee into their gorgous white tail. I know this for a fact! So their yellow stain is sadly a chemical stain and al the whitening shampoo in the world won't shift it. Even hairdressers bleach won't touch it.

The best answer I'm afraid, is to keep the tail as clean as possible. Plaits are good, pulling the hair for the sides of the tail to the front for one plait to stop the sides getting stained from poo. This tends to hold a lot of the tail out of the way.

The blue shampoos are good when the tail is grubby white, but those yellow stains need growing out I'm afraid. (I'm not saying your horse has yellow stains, but they are best avoided)

I wash my mares whole tail in boots cheap shampoo. Then for the end bit I have a bucket of good warm water with some more shampoo in, then a couple of baby sterilising tabs in. I dunk the end of the tail in and give it a good rub to get the suds going. Then I brush through the ends with a dandy brush, dunk again, and leave it for a bit while I wash the rest of her. Then rinse well. In between washes I give it a light spray of dry oil and put it in a few plaits - I like to use more than one plait as then she can still swish at the flys. Takes regular washing to keep it clean and make new stains easier to wash out. Is a bit of a task, but well worth it when she has a beautiful white 'my little pony' tail!!

I swaer by pig oil and sulphur - when you wash it off, the tail is always sparkling white. When it's on, it's almost white, and mud and poo just slide off when brushed. also makes it grow fast and stops breakage!

I had to smile when I saw this post - yesterday i washed out the boy's mane and tail, and left it to dry overnight, ready for re-oiling. beautiful and white it was - till i got the the yard and saw he'd had the runs overnight  he's had another shampoo and i hope it'll be ok for tonight. :D

Spray the tail with baby oil (below the dock) for a couple of days before washing and brush and leave in. Then the first wash wash it with warm water and fairy liquid. Rinse. Wash again with any shampoo. Important thing is to condition afterwards. You'll be amazed at how white it comes up after this... I found it totally be accident (her tail was so tangled I sprayed baby oil in- my friend said this is the method she always used on her old grey hunter).

I've always used bleach! Wash the tail with any shampoo, mix a little bleach into half a bucket of water. Dip the tail in nearly, but not quite, as far as the dock. Then rinse immediately with another few buckets of water. If the tail is mixed black and white separate the white hairs first and only dip those. I don't know what would happen if you tried to bleach black hair! To finish I use lots of conditioner and rinse. It comes up really soft.
