getting to shows?

The price of a days rental is damned cheap when you consider the expense the owner has to go to!

If you can't afford to run a box or a reliable towing vehicle and trailer then you are putting anyone you ask at risk.

Anybody who takes a passenger in their vehicle should have insurance and licences to carry a third party.
 
I find it impossible to get to shows now, used to get lifts with people before I moved yards. Am saving up to buy a little rice trailer so can take myself to local shows.
If you and your lift have the relevant insurance then where is the risk?

Most insurance for boxes is for transporting your own horses only. - personal use.
Therefore the vehicle insurnace could be invalid.
And if there was an accident, the person having a lift's horse insurers might agaisnt the box driver.
With the new transport regs, expect more checks for certificates of competence and correct operators /road fund licence on anyone moving ther people's horses.
 
So, with the relevant insurance, theres no risk...

No money changing hands at all
and the horsebox insurers permitting the carriage of other peoples' horses . Many don't ( personal use only,which is why it is so cheap) so chekc wiht them before giving anyone a lift.
and not for commercial reasons , otherwise need full operators licence and can't use Private Road tax rate.
 
Well, i am another of those who dont have their own transport (or indeed their own horse, but close enough). Yes, i do feel awkward asking for lifts, but people always have the option of saying no !

The price of hiring a box IS quite high, in this area its about £90-100 day, but on the other hand, i don't travel that much. it would cost me a lot more to buy a box, insure it, plate it, and maintain it. If i was competing regularly, as in every weekend, and had to travel to my instructor as well, then i would consider buying a box, but for the amount i travel at present, it isn't worth it.

I wouldnt bother with a trailer, FWIW. I dont consider the extra expense of a towing vehicle worth it. I'd get a 5.5 tonne box.
