getting your horse to dtand for in-hand showing...

Practise practise and more practise! and dont do too much at once, no more that 15 mins a day or they get bored. just ask your horse to stand and reward with a pat or treat, walk or trot away and repeat. Try and practise in different places too, fields, lanes and around other horses.

loads of practise- moving the horse back and forward and rewarding when they get it right at home in the menage
Sorry- no quick answer- took me quite a while- but once its learnt they tend to do it all the time unprompted!

Exactly the same!

My yearling stands quite nice naturally when asked to stand, his fronts are always square and his backs are only slightly unsquare. You just practise standing him square at home.

all i did was whilst I was fussing her or generally tiding her up just gently pushed her away from me until she adjusted her feet- then huge hugs! ha ha. they dont realise they are being "taught" something if you vary the places and time you do it.
I did it a field gates, in the stable when I was going to hay or feed her, in the menage, on the way out to the feild.
As long as you dont badger them and only ask for small movements (particularly when asking them to go backwards) they get the hint.

Forgot to add, actually they shouldn't stand square for in hand showing.

Look at all the photos in H&H.

The two legs nearest to the judge should be further apart than the legs away. When the judge changes sides your horse should be gently pushed a step back to give the same picture again.
Hope that makes sense. Like this....

Missy does this too, its just her back that dont square out

When I have touched her with a schooling whip she adjusts them and then is rewarded with polos , Oh how she loves polos

Of course, here's mine.

First practising, aged 10 months. Would be for the judge on the other side if you see what I mean. Then waiting his turn in the ring, 6 weeks later, so not stood up as such but still disciplined enough to stand nicely when needed.
