Hey,

I am in a bit of a dilemma, I have had my horse for a year now, and I am totally in love with him. I have bought him to event, and so far, really done well in dressage and coming along with our show jumping. I haven't however been able to event him as of yet, been able to go eventing yet, the reason for this is because the xc is not up to scratch. I have never been afraid of xc before, but I find taking him xc rather scary. The reason for this is because he's not confident enough, so races to fences at a gallop, I'm never quite sure whether he is going to take off or not, then we have this vicious circle of him getting strong, then I get strong, and then we knock each others confidence. Also, we haven't got easy access to a xc course.

I'll explain now, that he is my first horse (I've had a loan horse before, and helped school many younger horses in show jumping and dressage), he's 9 yo, so no longer a baby. And when I went to try him out, I was told he was good at xc, and he ticked all the other boxes. Now since getting him, I've learned, this has never been the case (through people who knew the owner before) Anyway, I'm happy with him in every other respect.

Now I'm faced with the decision, whether to keep him, and only do mainly dressage and jumping, sell him (which I really don't want to do) to get a more confident horse or another idea I had, was getting someone pro to take him xc schooling for me,perhaps I could regain confidence on another horse, then get them to explain, and help me with him? I've always been a bit stubborn about someone else riding my horse to improve them, as I've wanted him to be as it were "all my own work"

What do people think about this?? Right or wrong, and any suggestions of people to do this for me? We can comfortably show jump 1m15, so he does have the ability (obviously only looking for tiny tiny xc jumps to be schooled over)

Thank you.
(Would appreciate it if this doesn't turn into a nasty thread about me choosing the wrong horse to buy please? Just because, he is an amazing horse, I just may not have been looking for the right things when choosing! :) )

Find your local eventer and get them to come school him at home then at a xc course. Or if you want to have a go, go to a good eventing coach and have a lesson, explain your problems and see if they can offer you any help. Your not near me so I cant help with suggestions on who to use but there will be people out there that will do this sort of thing for you or with you.
