I have the opportunity to buy a brnad new gfs jump saddle for under £300 so was thinking a bit of a bargain but have no expierience of these eg comfort, what type of horse they fit best etc any thoughts??

GFS are a good make for the average market and tend to fit a multitude of shapes depending on the model you are buying. One of my liveries has just bought a brand new VSD model which RRP was £795.00 but was on sale at saddlers for £595. Her horse is a M/W with average wither. Hope this helps

I bought one about 6 months ago for my odd-shaped veteran. He's a teeny bit croup high and as he gets older his back has started to sag a little. My Wintec one stopped fitting him as it was bridging where his back was dipping. Tried a Thorowgood but same problem. He's still a lovely ride and deserves to be comfortable so I splashed out on the GFS. It's great!

My new girl came with a new GFS. She is really really wide with hardly any wither and it fits her well.
I don't particularly like it, find it hard to sit into it, that however may just be me.

Hate to hijack this but, is it from a reliable source? Lots of saddles get stolen and sometimes bargains are just too good to be true.

If it is from a trustworthy source - lucky you!!

Good point ID. I bought my GFS new and it was about £900 {{looks nervously over shoulder in case OH is hovering}}. £300 seems too good to be true unless second hand. Things that seem too good to be true usually are.

Oops I'm goin to hijack too. I have one, brought new bout 5 years ago and no longer use it (hasn't been used for bout 2 years as horsey gone) but how much value do they decrease in? Its a GP style and really should sell it as need space in the tackroom!!!

My horse came with a lovely VSD which fits a treat I am very happy with it but have also since got another make, a GP which has a deep seat and bigger knee rolls for jumping, otherwise the GFS is very comfortable, well made and I think good quality.

I think there is a bit of snobbery about saddles and I have compared the GFS with other makes and it looks just as good. some people have said they are made in South America, is this not so good??, then again I think a lot of tack which may say English leather isn't always MADE in the UK, but in the 3 years I have my saddle it it's worn very well and nothing has broken or gone wrong with it.

OP- Glad you posted this as I may be buying a gfs saddle. My local saddlery recommends them and I am going to try gp one that is made for high wither horses. The replies on this thread have given me more confidence!

no probs - its a sale from a local v well known tack shop apparently it was ordered in for someone and it didn't fit and has been with them ever since it's a bit of weird size (18.5" narrow)which is prob why it is so cheap thanks for all the feed back tho

I have just bought a GFS generation training saddle for just under £400 new

That is just what they cost - which is great

I know other GFS saddles are much more money - so sounds like you getting a bargain

Just to add - I love riding in mine the saddle seems to really suit me and it fits my boy for now

I've had a one for 9 years - it was the only saddle that fitted my horse and me when I wanted a new saddle. I've had no problems at all with it.

Really comfy - now no longer fits and has caused bigger vets bills than what we paid for it

Hopefully it can be tinkered with to get it fitting (too wide!!)
