I know there are a million other threads like this, but just needed a rant really :)

My mare is for sale and although a slow start she has gotten a lot of interest. Anyway, got a call about her, spoke on the phone a lot, lots of messages and arranged a viewing for the following week.

They came and really liked her. They were worried about PSSM as she is an Appaloosa so they took some tail hairs and sent them off to America for testing. They said if the result was negative they would want her. He asked if I would consider an offer and I said no as she was already far too cheap! A week and a half later (today) the results came back negative. He contacts me and offers me a ridiculous sum of money for my fab pony. I said no thats far too little and told him the price was x as previously discussed. He replied, OK I hope you find her a nice home! Now I know hes playing me, but I genuinely do have others interested so i'm not too bothered, but if he never intended on paying what we had discussed, why waste his own time and money? (He came from London to Nottingham too) Im just glad the other lady who is seriously interested held out for her. Fingers crossed they will have her subject to vetting. They have already given her a new stable name so fingers crossed for a fab home for a beautiful girl xx

i once had someone come look at my horse i had for sale.they told me this was wrong that was wrong, i was asking much too much money, blah blah and offered me 400 less than the already low asking price. They sounded like they didnt really want my horse, so i said no, funny thing is next day they were ringing me offering me more money. lol, one does wonder sometimes!! good knocking down price tactic!!

To be fair you had not agreed a price, they had not paid a deposit, they had not arranged a vetting, so they were quite far off a sale.

Glad you have found a good new home for your mare though!

I always think that until the money's exchanged hands, anything can happen. Goes for houses as well as horses.

So glad it looks like you've found a good home :)

Some people just have to try and play games when buying or selling anything. I honestly can't see how behaving like this makes anyone want to sell to them. I'll always try to get a price on something I'm buying dropped, but if seller says they're not taking offers I move on unless I'm willing to pay up. I don't understand why they took it any further!

Hope it all goes well with your other buyer and that then they try to make a comeback and you can tell them where. To go! :)

I was trying to do what was right, as as someone said above, no deposit was taken so I could have let the other person buy her. But, me being honest decided that as they were first I would wait and let them do the test etc.

I prefer the other lady though anyway :O) x

Ahh I see what you mean. I think you were being too accommodating to them. If they wanted to do tests that is fine but you had the right to continue showing the horse and sell it to anyone who did not want to do these tests. If they wanted to reserve the horse they should have paid a deposit.

I think it's reasonable to keep a horse for sale until the price is agreed and they have put down a deposit subject to vetting. It's nice to be helpful, but it does leave you open to negotiation on price.

Hope she goes to a nice home - personally I think excessive haggling is a personality flaw (the need to always get one up on someone else) so you'll probably get a nicer owner.

I agree with Booboo.
Interesting that you write 'trying to do what was right' and 'being honest' regarding the first potential purchaser. That was all they were. Potential purchasers. There is nothing dishonest or wrong about keeping a horse on the market until it is sold, if the first person havent firmly committed to buying and left a deposit the horse isnt sold. This just leaves you with the possibility of losing other potential buyers.

Stick to your guns, either they want the horse or they dont, but I wouldnt stop advertising and showing your horse to people until a sale is agreed :)

I wouldn't call them timewasters. They offered you what they thought the horse was worth - give or take....

If you've had lots of interest, how come no sale?

I like to work on a first come first served basis. I'm in no rush to sell her, so they enquirer first, I let them do their thing. The amount of money they offered me was insulting and not what she is worth at all!

They are dealers and £200 is not what she is worth. I'd rather her go to a loving home where she will be a much loved pet and not brought on and sold.

Now if I find a home I really like than I will be more than happy to let her go for a lesser price. Home is more important than price to me. x

A good home is important to me too, Id rather sell to the person I liked for the horse that is why I couldnt stick to a first come first served basis.
If two people in quick succession came to see my horse and I liked the second person better, I wouldnt hang around waiting for the first person to make their minds up and make me an offer and potentially lose a sale to the purchasers I preferred, through having them hanging around.

It may have been am insulting amount (fair enough), however that doesn't make them timewasters.

To me they have wasted my time as he asked me at the time they came to see her if I'd accept an offer. I told them the minimum I was willing to accept (Which I might add was about a third off the asking price) and they said she was exactly as described and they wanted to do the PSSM test. He then text again to say it had been sent off and made me another offer which I said again the minimum I was willing to accept. Now if they never had any intention of paying the amount I wanted, that makes them a time waster in my eyes.
