Have recently noticed that my horses are being fed treats whilst they are in their stables, now IMHO, this is why horses bang their stable doors when they see people - they are always expecting food. My horses never used to to this, something I was very pleased about, but now they are, and also getting a bit nippy! Now, would I look really anal if I was to put signs up 'please do not feed', or should I just hope they forget about their new habits when they start living out again?

I personally would put up the sign or ask people (politely) not to feed them please! If they ask why i would just say because they get nippy when fed treats and you dont want anyone getting nipped, or something like that

I would speak to the YO and ask for them to stop it. One of my yard rules is no horses are fed treats except by their owners. and even then I suggest that they don't feed their own horses treats over the door because it is my stable doors that get kicked and me that gets nipped when i turn them out or bring in. If the YO does it rather than you then it is not personal. if people still insist on doing it then to be honest I would put up a sign.

One of the horses at our yard has a "No treats please" sign outside his door because he gets nippy - I don't think anyone sees it as being anal or grumpy, just a polite warning. No-one wants to get nibbled, after all!

I think you need to put up a notice saying "Please don't feed" coz with my old horse some prat fed him the remains of a hamburger roll over the gate and being a real guzzle he ate it. When I got to the field I saw remnants of said roll on the ground, but my poor old chap was all swollen up - his eyes were so swollen he could hardly see, and instead of nostrils he had just tiny slits there coz his lips and face had all swollen up and he was struggling for breath. These things always happen on a Sunday don't they? anyway the vet rushed out as an emergency and said it was anaphylactic shock and he could easily have died; and all because someone didn't think and fed him a roll with hamburger relish on it, which he was allergic to.

I had a laminitic once and the farrier said not to feed carrots as the beta caratene isn't good for laminitics. I think you as the owner need to be the ONLY person to feed treats; and again if yours is at livery you need to be guided by the yard owner, coz like's been said, she/he has to deal with something if its been spoilt and gets nippy or bargy.
