Did you get a receipt from person who gifted you the horse? I did the same for my God daughter, but did her a receipt one horse in exchange for 2 boxes Maltese’s ? strange I know but had anything happened to me soon after it could have caused issues with my estate .

I'm hoping you have a receipt of confirmation of some kind, if so call the police.
She has stolen your pet which is illegal.
Unfortunately if you have no proof the police more than likely won't get involved ?

The yard owner might be able to get the police to come out for B&E.

Unless you have a receipt (as stated above), ownership of the horse is a civil dispute and you will need to engage a solicitor if you intend trying to get it back.

Passport does not constitute proof of ownership, unfortunately.

I was 'gifted' a horse but I insisted on paying £10. My concern was that I would break and school the horse and the previous owner might then ask for him back.

Unfortunately no advice but what a horrible situation to be in! I am potentially going to be 'gifted' a horse later this year but this has highlighed to me the importance of getting a receipt.

Insist on paying a nominal amount for the horse even just £1 and get a receipt regardless. There is no take backs then.

If someone has broken into your yard and stolen your horse I'm presuming that you've already involved the police??

So police (when it happened hopefully), look out your proof of ownership and join BHS gold membership then call their legal advice line.

But basically if someone steals your property then you call the police ??‍♀️

My sister was given a foal, but she insisted on paying for it by cheque, it was a nominal amount about £10.00 and the owner didn't have the. interest to do anything with it.

When it was 4 and broken in, the old owner called by and suggested that my sister give the horse back, but my sister was able to show that she had, in fact, bought it and it was hers.

We were gifted a mini a few years back and I made sure I paid the owner £1 and got a full receipt.

OP, you need the involve the police someone has broken in and taken your property. If it was your daughter who posted weeks ago, she was given some excellent advice that I guess hasn’t been taken onboard and acted upon.

I hope a suitable resolution for all is reached but above all, the horse is safe and well cared for.

You will have to push the police too, they overwhelmingly state that these sort of horse incidents are a civil matter.

The police will do nothing, even with cast iron proof. You need to start court proceedings, but it will cost money and you may not be successful sadly. The best thing you could have done was to prevent them taking the horse in the first place, but its clearly too late for that now, so court is your only option.

Whose name is on the passport? Presumably she allowed you to change the horses ownership into your name? Then you can surely call the police and report it as theft

A passport in your name is not proof of ownership.
