Was just on the phone to my mum. The other day she was telling me that one of her colleagues was trying to rehome a 4yo Golden Retriever - today the full story came out, and it's a beauty:mad:

The colleague has the dog, because its original owners went on holiday to Hong Kong and left it with a neighbour, who is the colleague's friend. (With me so far?) The neighbour has several children, 2 Yorkshire Terrier bitches (unspayed) and runs her own business, so this was never going to work as a permanent arrangement - but it would be ok for a while. Anyway, one of the terriers came into season, and the retriever is also entire so it was causing trouble, so the neighbour texted the owners to ask them if they could come back a bit early as this was causing real problems (don't ask me about the ins and outs of when they were expected back, cos I don't know;)).

They got an answer - 'Actually we have moved out here permanently - we thought he would be good for your family'.

:eek::eek::eek::mad::mad::mad:

This dog has seperation anxiety - barks the house down on his own apparently. My mum's colleague took him in short-term to prevent any accidents happening, but as she works she can't keep him, and my mum can't take him as of course she works as well. Apparently he is a lovely, and fairly well-trained dog. He is now going to the RSPCA kennels to be rehomed.

I just can't get over how incredibly irresponsible his original owners were! Poor dog.

I'm sorry but the original owners are b*stards!!:mad::mad:

Your mum should have him :)- whip his nads off and get into a routine and he won't care she is at work. All our dogs have settled into a routine where we have worked - they kip when you are out. Retrievers love a cuddle and a kip so would be perfect!!:D:D:D

Poor dog, still amazes me how irresponsible some folk are. Do you think your mum would consider him Spudlet, or are her hours too long? I know she is still reluctant to consider another dog but possibly if one with a sad story was presented to her ...;)

so sad...

Just a thought (as it's a purebred)... When I bought Harley, his breeder made me sign a contract in the event I couldn't keep him (which would NEVER happen) they would have him back or rehome him.... No way they could check with original owner? May save kennels?

MurphysMinder, her hours are really quite long:( She does 12 hour shifts, so the dog could be on its own for up to 8 hours at a time. She doesn't think it would be fair on him:(

Galaxy, I don't know about breeders I'm afraid but I presume that will have been tried, assuming they know who the breeder is. I doubt they have too much info about him since he has basically been dumped:(

I just can't get my head around how some people think. I just don't understand how a family pet, particularly something as loveable as a retriever, means so little to them. How do they sleep at night?

I am afraid I know of a similar story, a couple with a beautiful and very valuable pedigree Airdale, took the dog to kennels when they went on holiday (just a two week package holiday) and never bothered to collect the dog when they got back :( Its so unecessary and irresponsible.

I hope your Mum's friend finds a lovely (permanent) home for him.

ETA: Just a thought but perhaps this lady could contact Labrador Rescue, I know the lady that runs the charity down this way and they always do their utmost to find a loving home.

I *think* the dog has already been signed over - the local kennel has kennel cough though so the dog will go in as soon as that has been cleared up:( So sad, although I'm sure he will find a home quickly once he's there. He sounds like a very nice dog.

I suppose it's the same old story - they are cute fluffy puppies, but then they get big, and a bit whiffy and muddy, and they need walking even when it's raining and cold, and eventually it's just easier to walk away and palm the responsibilty off on someone else:mad::(

I suspect you are right sadly - mind you we might have a Border Collie up for rehoming soon!!! LOL, I told son to get a Springer!!! :)

Well if its okay to dump them when they get whiffy and muddy, who can I leave Evie with? The recent dry days have turned her paddling pool in the field (just a flooded bit really) into something more resembling a hippos wallow so what did she do, lie down in it! Eau de stagnant mud, delightful.:p
