my daughters mare is an absolute gem but just wondering about thoroughbeds and their feet

she seems sound but looks like a wimp when going on any kind of stones / gravel - she will avoid them if its possible a bit like saying "Mum i don't like stones / gravel"

When my daughter is firm with her she will walk where asked / told to but wondering if i can get something to help her not feel the stones as much.

Seen be farrier a few weeks ago and he says she has good feet with no problems.
Feed Calm and condition and alfa oil to build her up.
lives out 24/7 and rugged

cheers x

This could be totally different, as not a TB, but my mare went through a phase of this. Her feet were slightly too long and I'm convinced, with hindsight, that she may have been starting with laminitus. With a new farrier, who shortened her feet (gradually) and a change from rich haylage to hay we haven't seen any more signs of it.

I used to have a TB years ago with rubbish feet. Biotin and limestone flour helped a lot with that one.

Only what I've heard from being on this forum and doing bits of reading - horse needs low sugar, low starch, high fibre diet and add magnesium oxide to the feed.....apparently that's the healthy hoof diet...

I'd have her shod all round and look at potentially having her stabled overnight. Wet conditions make the feet (especially the soles) soft.

You could ask your farrier about gel pads, however they're not great to use at this time of year - again because moisture can get underneath and keep the soles soft.

By brining her in you will allow the soles to dry out - and allow you to apply keratex foot hardner daily.

My tb mare is the same.... Tb's are known for their thin soles

And flat feet - I have one too!

Mine is on a healthy hoof diet as she's also laminitic, but she still has thin soles and hates walking on stones. I just have to be sympathetic and avoid them where possible.

Footiness could be linked to too much sugar, strarch etc and I'm told alfalfa isn't good for footy horses as it can make it worse. I'd try mag ox and brewers yeast, has really helped my barefoot TB. Also might be worth having your grazing tested o see if the mineral ratios are upsetting her feet :)

I agree with this. I would also advise your daughter not to insist that the horse walks on surfaces that it finds uncomfortable - it will do no good and may damage the horse's trust in her. :)
