OK, have a girth dilemma, both girths on both horses wearing out & need replacing.

First horse is a traddie cob: typical traddie build with low withers and built like a barrel, so saddles tend to slip sideways. He currently uses a wintec elastic girth with a neoprene sleeve as he's pink skinned and ridiculously sensitive & this girth did rub him a bit a while back which is why I bought the neoprene sleeve.

I'm thinking of trying the "Thorowgood Cob Airborne Girth" (the one WITHOUT the elastic) which they recommend for barrel-shaped cobs like him. But also there's the Shires Neoprene Girth, BUT it has elastic at one end of it which I'm not sure I'd like.

Traddie cob has a traditional saddle and so needs a longer girth, i.e. 48" (sorry I don't do metric!).

Second horse is a Welsh D mare: currently wears a Aerborne Humane girth, BUT having had a buckle on this girth come undone a while back, am taking the opportunity to change her girth as its always been a bit short and now I can't do it up coz she's put on a bit of weight. The reason I don't like these "humane" girths is because if a buckle does come undone, the whole girth just drops about six inches - very disconcerting - whereas in a normal girth there's at least another buckle/strap to stay in place with. Also, I've done some research and these so-called humane girths may not be quite so nice for the horse after all???

Soooo......... I'm thinking of trying another girth for mare but don't know what to use. Again, a longer girth is needed so not a dressage girth. I'm half thinking of the Wintec elastic for her. I think there's a newer version of it with a bit more padding to it???

I need long girths for both horses. And would prefer not elastic girths; and deffo not leather.

Any advice welcome??? Thanks.

The girth that my Sec D is happiest in is a Stubben cord girth, and she's uber-fussy on girths (hates neoprene with a loathing). It's wide and has split ends so works well if you need to use balance/point straps to stop saddle slipping on 'curvy girls'.
The wintec I've only tried in dressage length, but it worked very well on the same horse - this was the shaped wintec not the straight one which appeared to have a lumpy bit in the centre - the long curved version (if you can still get them) could be OK but doesn't have the split ends so may not lie as well as the cord one.

I have Wintec and Thorowgood synthetic girths for both of my horses, the ones with no elastic at the ends but elastic all through them. I really like them and more importantly, so do the horses. I have the anatomically shaped ones.

I looked at the Shires ones but thought they were horrid, really badly made and felt cheap.

Stubben Trevira cord girth. I posted a few days ago that I was told by a saddler that many Master Saddlers recommend these and today, another Master Saddler told me the same. He said he wished more people would buy them but it was a shame they have old fashioned 'string' girth connotations-he said they aren't string (but v v strong cord),let the skin breathe(lots of gaps) v strong, not sweaty, spread the load/pressure as are wide (sposed to be good for girthy horses)and
are durable & easily washed.
Also not expensive-makes a change! (About £26-30.) Just spreading the Master Saddler word...;)

Mmm, have looked at these; brought back memories of the nylon girths of my pony club days!! I seem to remember that they always seemed to come unravelled at some stage during their usage; plus probably weren't all that comfy for the horses as the nylon stitching never held its shape well and the nylon cord probably bit in to the poor horse's middle. So when I saw it, that was my first reaction to this girth, but hey, if it works for you.......

Yep - that was my first reaction too - took me right back decades to my ponies!!!
The modern ones are very different - they are soft cord and mine is lasting well - doesn't crinkle up like the old nylon jobbies.

Mmm, you've certainly given me food for thought...... might be worth a try mebbe. I saw some at my local tack shop so might go along there and take another look.

Thanx!

Have you looked at the professional choice girths ? I have one and it's fitted everything I ride, it's nice a grippy and nothing so far has decided it doesn't like it.
