What exactly is it that is causing them? have you purchased a horse that has already got them? or is it something your horse suffers from regularly? is it a young horse where the skin is not hardened to wearing a girth or a horse with particularly delicate skin?
Have you changed to your girth to a softer or more comfortable one, use a girth sleeve, do you always wash the sweet away and keep the area clean? and stretch the legs forward every time you girth up?...sorry but you have to mention everything just in case its someone that doesn't know much about girth galls or preventing them....if you do, ignore me!
You must stop riding the horse for at least a couple of weeks, and let the wound heal properly, depending on the severity, you may need to apply something cold to reduce the swelling, keep the area clean from infection by giving it a good wash and apply an antiseptic cream and let it heal in its own time.
Only when its healed completely can you then think about perhaps hardening the skin in that area, if your careful about everthing mentined above, using either a skin hardener, some tackshops do stock such creams (Gold Label used to to one).
hi, hes only just started to be ridden, hes not quite 4. i always ride him with a sheepskin girth cover and stretch his legs before i get on. also he gets hosed down and sponged off after every ride without exception, they started about a month ago so i stopped riding him, then they went so i started riding again and they are back again, its very frustrating!
