hiya, im looking to get a new girth.
currently have a 48" thorowgood girth with elastic on one side and saddle is quite 'roley' on his back (very barrel like pony).
i need one that is very stable and also very comfortable (pony is quite sensitive and can quite easily get little bald patches) hes never 'girthy' or nippy though.

i have heard good things about the stubben string girth, has anyone tried these? are they good? would i just get the same size as the girth i currently have? its also been recommended by saddler.

im thinking either that or a thorowgood cob girth?

thanks in advance for any advice xx :)

I was told by my saddler that for the rounder ones the elastic on one side can help the saddle slip. I have one with elastic on both ends and it's a lot more stable than my old girth.

yes thats what i was told :) my sister has one with elastic on both ends so might give that a go x

I fit mainly barrel shapes and I get slightly cross when saddle fitters recommend fixed girths - not kind on the horse and when the ribcage contracts (after all, what expands must contract!) it can leave some slack, which means potential instability. STRONG elastic at both ends, a wide grippy shaped girth (Atherston, wide shaped central band, not a narrow strip) and roller buckles, simple!

I think fixed girths when done up massively tight, help slightly unstable saddles that aren't a perfect fit. I see the damage from overgirthing. And anyone saying that elastic girths are bad because they're easy to overtighten - if we weren't so lazy and actually leaned down and checked our girths before and after tightening, instead of seeing whether we CAN tighten the girth, the horse would benefit!

I tried the stubben string girth and hated it! Its VERY wide and constantly rubbed my horse behind the elbow. Had mine a while ago though, don't know whether its still the same design. Nice soft material though.

I loved my thorowgood elastic one side girth for an ever expanding/deflating good doer. Puff ball on tacking up etc....Fantastic. It did when I think about it slip the saddle only slightly (tiny) I always thought it was just my bad lopsided riding! Never tried elastic both sides but sounds interesting.

I got the elastic thor'good for another little pony and despite measuring got completely one too big and changed it for right size which was excellent.
