I've just got a lovely FFS- I mean FSS comfort girth, only I chose the size based on the normal straight one I'm using. They don't work like that, do they?

I'm guessing the girth needs to come right up almost to the saddle flaps so the cutaway part actually corresponds with the elbow - is that right?

This is 24" - the next is 28" and then 30", 32", 34". Please can anyone help me get the right size this time?! :( Hugs 'n' cakes if you do...

I had exactly the same problem when I bought an Amerigo girth for one of my horses. I got a 30" which is her normal size and it's too short. I've now got a 34" as I felt it needed to be another 2" higher on each side. I haven't tried it on yet as she is lethal in the wind but if this theory applied to your horse then going from a 24" to a 28" would raise it 2" each side. I guess you could even go for a 30" unfortunately for me I couldn't find a dressage girth that was 36" long!!

..

I've always though the cut away is for the leg movement more under the horse......not up the side and around the top of the leg

If you have only just put on that girth I would say that it was to big.....because you are going to pull it up at least another 2 holes each side?

I would personally go 2inchs smaller at the least

I think it would go up one hole either side. But if you were trying to get the widest point (the ends) beneath the elbow - I lifted and moved the leg and it looked really pinchy if the elbow caught the fat bit - then you'd end up with something like a 12" girth and the cutaways wouldn't be fitted to any part of the anatomy? The way it looks to me is the fat middle sits on the chest, then it swoops in round the elbow and then pokes out again above. To me it looks like that fat end should sit in the space between the saddle cloth and the round muscle at the top of the leg (anatomy 101, sigh).

Having said that it's practically impossible to find a photo of one actually on a horse!

I would swap it for the 28 if you have enough room on the girth straps the other side.

It's on the same holes on the other side. I'm guessing 1" is about 1 hole, so given that I might get another hole up either side when he breathes in, 28" would give me 3 holes up. Do you think that's enough to clear the elbow? In the picture it looks like it would be close. The 30" would just be another hole either side but that's getting quite close to the cloth. Argh so fiddly!
