My saddle is a mono flap and I’ve found that when I’m doing up the girth the front strap of the girth will be loose even though it’s done up to be on the same hole number as the back strap. My girth is a Contoured prolite dressage girth and is always loose at the front And tight at the back under his belly. I don’t understand why this is happening and whether it’s the girth strap or just my horse’s shape or if I’m positioning the saddle too far forward or too far back on his back (he’s very short backed).

Any advice or ideas as to why this is would be appreciated TIA

Don't go to the same hole, there is no rule that you should and, in fact, you should simply girth to the same tension on both straps, choosing the appropriate hole to do so. It's ALWAYS about the horse's comfort, arbitrary rules like using the same holes are nonsense but we seem to think there should be these rules. Bellies are different shapes, girth straps are in different places to angle to the girth grooves differently but no-one ever talks about it to help riders see what is logical and good for the horse.

For placement of the saddle it is fitted to be in one place and you must refer back to your fitter if there's any chance you're putting it in the wrong place. Critical. The rule is that the front edge of the tree points should be 2" back from the back of the shoulder blade in most cases which is a lot further back than most people place them.
