Although I have a dressage saddle, I have short girth straps on it so need a full sized girth.

I did have a Keiffer one on my black mare, but her armpits have gone a bit bald and she can be a little sensitive having it fastened. I then bought a shaped Wintec one which has elastic in the middle to allow give and she seems a little better in this as it is cut away from the shoulder but my concern is that it is a bit hard.

Any other suggestions?

I am thinking of getting a sheepskin cover for the wintec one at the momet but am open to ideas :)

I've seen a gel one i think at Old Dairy Saddlery, which i was interested in for similar sensitive type, not sure if its any good tho? £20 oddish i think

I have the professionals choice girth with the Velcro on-off sheepskin lining. Elastic both ends. I like it and so does our boy who is quite girthy - as a 3 year old he used to be quite nippy about having his girth done up at all. Much better with this girth.

My girthy mare absolutely hated her Wintec elastic girth, she became quite savage when I was using it :o She has a forward girth groove & seems to like her anatomical girth (elastic at both ends), she is also happy wearing a humane girth although I am cautious about doing it up too tight, the pulley action means overtightening could be a problem. I use both of them with a girth sleeve :)

I've been through SO many girths on my gelding, he has rotten girth galls from before I had him (which was when he was just broken! poor lamb). I've tried everything. albion leather girth with fancy sheepskin cover : broken skin. padded leather girth on its own: bleeding. Nuumed cover on wintec: good for a bit, but then the cover started twisting - bleeding. Finally, got the basic HKM soft neoprene with elastic insets and it is the first girth I've used in 4 years of owning this horses that doesn't either gall, draw blood or catch his elbows. Nightmare!

Amerigo or Prestige with sheepskin

I usually agree with druid in all things, but..................

I used to look after a horse who had the worst girth galls I've ever seen (chestnut mare), and she was in an Amerigo girth with sheepskin and it made them worse! The very thin cut away part basically caused a pressure point, and she would be bleeding after 10 minutes.

One of my friends has an excessively sensitive and thin skinned horse and has worked her way through every combination and expense and they all rub. She has finally ended up with a string girth (don't flinch) from Stubben - they are a lot wider and softer than the old ones we used centurys ago and it seems to be working!

I have just bought a Stubben girth for my thin skinned TB and it is lovely, doesn't rub at all. It is made of soft material. Also i found the Thorowgood shaped ones pretty good too.

Another vote for the stubben cord girths. Working wonders on my new lad who is thin skinned and always needed sheepskin covers previously. No rubs at all :)

hi
mine's allergic to neoprphein (sp :o ) and is sensitive so had real trouble with him ,sheepskin covers made him worse :(

he is ok in his fieldhouse girth for dressage (really soft leather with elastic in the middle)
and i use a paul jones leather stud girth nearly all the time as i find the bigger area surface distrubutes the presure and helps keep him comfy and he has been fine since
