Checked my boy after XC yesterday and he has a couple of nasty raised lumps where he seems to have had girth galls. His girth sits quite far back so its not in his elbows, just on the skin round the girth. He currently has a made to order leather padded girth with elastic both ends, but think he could do with a wider softer one...anyone any thoughts?! Was looking at the Pro choice girths.....

Kat as you know D gets terrible girth galls, I have purchased several of the Cottage Craft sheepskin girth sleeves and dont seem to have had any more problems. Might be a problem if you cannot wash them regularly though. Think I paid about £15 each for them.

One of my boys used to get galls even with very expensive soft leather girths. Changed to Wintec girths and he has never rubbed since. Not that expensive either and easy to clean.

Yeah thats the prob I have...washing facilities!! Leather girths are fab cos I clean it without a problem....and that was my thought with the Pro choice type ones I can hose them down....

HAve got a sheepskin sleeve which will go on for the time being until they have gone down....

I use the wintec girths, problem with my boy is not so much the girth but the girth straps as both of his saddles require short girths, have devised a system that seems to work, required a full length girth sleeve and a pair of sharp scissors hence the reason for cheap girth sleeves!

The Wintec or Thorowgood girths can be cleaned just as easily as a leather girth and come up well after a wash down without visiting a washing machine.

Another vote here for Wintec, my mare had terrible trouble with girth galls when I bought her, I tried everything and the Wintec was the only one that didn't rub. I just dunk mine in a bucket of water and give a light scrub with a dandy brush and they come up like new.

Lol!! I know, ingenious (sp!?)!! Hmm, may try a wintec one then...he has a thorowgood one and I dont like it... ideally want one that is elasticated both ends as am a fussy madam!!

our saddler does made to measure girths that are fab IMO but they are pricey! Sis cob Sunny has a 4" straight girth with attachments so you can do one strap more than the other to help keep the saddle in place as he has a very flat back whereas Pidge just has a shaped girth. Never had any problems with either of them.

rachelthegreat yep ideally he would have time off, and I am going to avoid riding him in his jump saddle until they have gone down. His dressage girth fits further back, and so isnt sore when is put on. However need to try and find a girth to stop it from happening again!!
