girths with elastic on one side..........

Elastic should be on the off side, and you girth up from the near side.

If you do up on the elastic end, all you are doing is stretching the elastic, not tightening the girth consistently around the horse.

It's better to have elastic in the middle, or at both ends. If you only have the option of elastic on one side I would altenate, but always tighten the girth from the non elastic side .

15hands Section D Gelding 8yo . Needs bringing back into work but is county m&m standard (according to judge I chatted to the other day) , has been driven by previous owner . But does need schooling . But loves jumping and done a bit of PC etc
He's a lovely chap and is a dude . I'd have him if he was bigger .

Niether!
Throw it away and get yourself one that has elastic each end or no elastic at all.

Girths with elastic at one end are the bain of saddle fitters lives.

We all go to such lengths to make sure that every thing we put on or do to a horse is symetrical and balanced... then why use a girth with elastic at only one end???? You wouldn't get only one sde of a saddle flocked... or use a bit that is only hinged at one side, or use half a numnah.... why people use these things I can't understand!

hmm I'm confused, I was told the offside too which is what I do but always wondered whats the difference? but yes I can see what you mean also, having said that won't the elastic stretch anyway no matter which side you do up....I duno really, I'm baffled or perhaps I'm just blonde!

You sound just like a man at my yard , He told us all one day the reason they were pointless and dangerous
grin.gif
Did make us giggle but he made a fair point . I don't own one anymore
But he also used to wear a bright orange gum shield out hacking

The elastic should be on the near side, otherwise the shaped girth I have is back to front!!!!!!

The whole point of these is to be kinder to your horse when you're girthing them up.

What we should all be doing is putting the girth up one hole at a time alternating sides, but does anyone actually do that?

Thats another point, there's so many new things out there on the market that are supposed to make life easier or more comfortable for you horse but then the next thing is your advised not to use them (not meaning your post) just in general... like prolite pads for example.

There is so much out there, yet so much can cause problems you never had...its baffleing

Yorkshire Lass is absolutely right. they are horrible things. please bin it and get one with central elastic (the wintec and thorogood chafeless are excellent and only about £20)
when jumping a decent-sized fence, as the horse comes up and lifts its shoulders, the elastic gives in a one-sided elastic girth and causes the saddle to jack-knife down the horse's spine. owwwwwwwww.

Looks like I need a new girth, thats daft then, why do the retailers sell then when they should know that they cause problems....again baffleing!

sorry i didn't mean to offend yorkshire lass, i use this girth because its what she was given to me with, so i never changed it as its what she's been ridden in for a long time

i'm not tryin to injure my horse i never knew they did damage

i hope i haven't been hurting her

LOL, I am not offended by anything! I am a grumpy old bag, and lots of new stuff seems like a load of fuss and nonsense to me!

Anyway, one new thing that I love are the Wintec fully elastic girths. They stretch slightly along the whole length so the horse has the heart room it needs and the saddle stays put. They are anotomicly cut so the shape is nice and comfortable too.Worth every penny!

now i am even more confused than i started with :S what is near and off side mean anyway. is near side the left??

please remember i am a young naive 17yo lol!!!!

No offence meant to you but I am so shocked by that answer I am almost speechless!

Surely, when you were first taught to ride (and by that I mean actually get on a horse) the instructor told you what, when, why and how? That totally basic thing should have been told and learnt in the first ten minutes that you mount from the NEAR side, the other side is the off side. I would think it is in most riding instruction books too.
If it was me, I'd be sacking your instructor; they're obviously not very thorough.

goes off shaking head and muttering "standards today are terrible" !

oops my bad lol sorry

i was probibly told but always just say right and left, i learnt to ride a very very long time ago, don't remember much from when i was 6 lol. i didn't have regular lessons and actually learnt most from a very wise old man.

girths with elastic on one side shouldnt be used as it encourages over girthing on one side....pulling the saddle to on side, therefore it becomes lop-sided and ill fitting...

throw it away and buy a stubben string girth......

I had one with elastic on each side but took me ages to find one. Who makes them? Could do with getting one now, will stop me breaking my nails when I girth up
smile.gif

When I'm judging I mark down people who have the elastic on the near side.

Last year I went to a saddle fitting clinic and girths with elastic on one side were really frowned upon from all the reasons already given, the concensus was elastic boths sides or none at all. If you do have elastic both sides try to have the girth done up on the same holes on both sides.
