What do you prefer? Does your girth have elastic or not? If so/not, why? Is this a conscious decision?

I only use girths with elastic - I figure it must be a lot more comfortable for the horse as it will give slightly when they are breathing. I will only use ones with elastic on both sides tho as a single side can pull/twist the saddle

I have a wintec elastic and it does my head in doing it up as I have to keep redoing it, but that's ok as I tend to do it hole by hole anyway. I like ones with both ends but haven't used one in a while and have a roly poly mare now!

I've got a flexi girth, horse seems to like it. I've almost always used elasticated girths on him as he's very sensitive. Used to get galls with the non-elasticated ones.

I'm firmly in the 'nay' camp when it comes to elastic in girths, but a livery at my yard has a flexi girth and raves about it! I might give it a spin and see how I like it... They are definitely unique!

A definite No from me - the whole saddle starts to slide round on my flat backed boy.

I had a flexi girth - I lasted almost half a mile with it and got off and led him home. It was awful. I realise its just the shape of my boy but I felt so insecure and he hated it.

I use a humane girth because its easier to do up the point and balance straps that I have to use when the girth strap is split at the top. I know they are not for everyone but they work for us :D

I have mine on a well-built tb. He's more barrel than table! I have had the saddle slip when using a non-elastic girth and one with the elastic at one end (didn't go much on that at all!), I'd say to definitely try before you buy, if you can. Bit like saddles I guess, there's no 'one size fits all'.

My worry about the flexi was whether it would rub. I always use a sleeve anyway, but the web is a bit like seatbelt stuff and it does make contact.

So far? No rubs!

IME its one of those things where you get what you pay for and the cheap and nasty's are just that and they streeeeeetttttchhh way more than you want.

I have both types.

One has a non elastic girth on his dressage saddle and an elastic girth on his jump saddle. He doesn't seem to mind either girth. I have never had issues with saddles slipping (unless I haven't done them up in the first place).

My other horse has a Wintec Cair dressage girth. It has no elastic and he goes well in it.

IMO if something works for your horse, doesn't cause any pain and is safe equipment then it shouldn't matter what you use. :)

My personal girth is a centre elastic dressage girth, I'd never have one without elastic.

I fit wide tricky natives and cobs for a living and nearly always use a wide padded Atherstone with elastic (strong!) at each end. Soft on the skin, wide so it grips, elastic has give for ribcage expansion but also follow the ribcage as it contracts, I believe that fixed girths leave a moment of slack unless over girthed. I see muscle damage, a groove right round, from overgirthing quite regularly. Elastic at one end tends to encourage saddles to move to sideways.
