My boy has just had his ulcers cured but it still girthy we think he has had ulcers for a long time so maybe it’s pain memory or maybe he just is a bit grumpy about being ridden let me know what you think x

Could definitely be down to perceived pain. Do his girth up slowly and maybe distract him with a treat when doing so. I’d also ensure he’s always fed HiFi just before being worked.

Yes thank you will try the treats for positive reinforcement and I always feed chaff before we ride

Even if you've had your saddle checked (I see too many "tick box" exercises) it's worth looking again. With reactions to being tacked up it's not straightforwards, unlike a way of going issue that may be related to the saddle, where a change in the horse can be instant, if the saddle is the issue and you try something else. A good fitter will be open minded and work through some options with you to try and properly eliminate the saddle as the issue. However due to this remembered discomfort it can take several rides, at least, to ensure the reaction has gone. You may need a second opinion (again, not a box ticking exercise) or if you're pretty knowledgeable and have access to other saddles, you could try some other options, but they must be a fairly good fit to begin with.
