The past few years i have foind it increasingly difficult killing animals... I dont kill spiders/wasps/ beetles etc , my reasoning being is that i cant eat it so dont need to hurt it. My family have always laughed it off as a little quirk of mine. But know i have rats at the stables and i cant bring myself to put out the bait. It wouldnt be so bad bit they are incredibly pretty to look at... A sort of chestnut colour. So please, someone give me a kick up the bum, they are eating my bins never mond the food!

If it helps remember, so I'm told, that rats do not have bladders & so leak urine any old where all the time ! All over your hay, feed bin surfaces etc etc etc. Yeuk. Now where did I put that rat bait.;)

Oh the joys of predictive text... I can spell. Honest.
Your right, rats are incontinent... My friend has domestic ones.. (my farm ones are much prettier) I think its a job to leave to the oh..

Once you get your nice rug's out of their storage bags and find the cute little rats have eaten massive holes in them I'm sure you'll have no issues with the bait traps ;)

I'm exactly the same - I don't kill anything I don't have to. It makes me sad when people kill spiders as they're just there to rid you of the other bugs.

However, I do breed mice as food for some of my other pets. All you can do is despatch them as quicker and humanely as possible.

Are there any decent instant kill traps on the market these days? Instant death would be my choice. The poisons commonly used kill the rodents cause internal bleeding, which doesn't sound nice.

What ever you decide to do, be brave. Nobody's gonna think less of you for bumping off the vermin.

I do also actually quite like our yards rat (at a distance...) ...our regulars have names! But sadly they have to be dealt with as they breed like wildfire :s and are vandals. There must be a humane ways to kill them,

Thanks dorian... Strangely I knew of this disease, someone died yrs ago from it, which is why I needed the slap. Hubby has kindly offered to put the traps out for me.
If another animal ate the dead rat would it be poisoned too?
I do briefly look at the giant mouse traps... The thought of having to pull the dead rat from its clutches was too much for my poor, cotton wool filled mind to deal with. If anyone finds my balls let me know!

There are humane ways of killing them, that maybe you'd want to try.
Buy a humane trap (cage with a narrowing entry) and put a delicious meal inside; I've found bacon to be especially popular. Put the trap in the feedroom overnight.
Ratty will enter, enjoy his final meal, and await your return in the morning.

In the morning, do NOT go into the feedroom. Do it like a REAL woman - send a bloke in :D The bloke then takes a double layer of supermarket packets, pops Samuel Whiskers in, and holds the open packet over the exhaust pipe of a car for a few minutes. The engine should be running ;) Ratty will fall asleep peacefully. This is our "PTS" method, which beats poison etc.

Give it a try!

I did think about asking the farmer if I could get a cat... The cat protection were offering farm cats a while ago. The terrier is banned.. He ate a hole the size of a dustbin lid trying to get to ratty.

Oh my dear god of COURSE rats have bladders! It never ceases to amaze me how this daft myth has become so popular! That said, they will mark territory (and just pee anywhere!) so caution and good hygiene is a must. As others have said though, please don't poison. It's a horrific way for any animal to die, and even if you're not concerned about the rats, who can survive after ingesting small amounts, their natural predators (foxes, birds of prey) can get through a lot of rats and the cumulative effects of poison are their undoing. Not to mention domestic animals who find a dead or dying rat an easy target. Friends of ours have just lost a cat this way.
Can't help you with your wussiness, but perhaps pest control might be easier if you knew you were being humane and safe... ;)

With a lot of them yes another animal eating a poisoned rat would be poisoned but there are some available that don't kill something eating the dead rat.
You can get humane traps that kill instantly as well tho - speak to a feed/farm store for advice

We had rats, then hopeless helper left out a bag of sugar beet. Rats ate their fill! Very messy to clear up in the morning :-o!!

You need a car with a petrol engine as it won't work with a diesel.:)
