I think it can be a long hard slog sometimes to find the right horse, especially when you're trying to please the tastes of father, mother and child! I've thankfully always been lucky, horses seem to have generally found me! The only time I've really been to look for one, I was after a companion foal!! So lots to chose from!

What are you after and price and and which websites have you checked?

Have you checked your local pony/riding club and website?

Well I decided 3 years ago never to have another horse after all the rescuing and rehoming, getting kicked and bitten etc. The last few winters Ive been looking after a dealers youngstock. Last year I was given a ropey looking colt foal skeletal wormy and riddled with flu! Soooo not what I was looking for!
but now my little ropey foal is a strapping handsome yearling!
You dont always get to chose your ideal horse but something comes along that will be better than you thought it would!
Stay positive and pony will appear as if by magic...if that fails...get rid of other half?:D;)

Am after a lead reign / first ridden. For a 5 year old girl, who would like to do pony club.

As she is only 5 and alhough very keen for the last 3 years I am aware that can change, so would like a loan or pay no more than £700.

I know not a lot of money, but feel that for her first pony that is enough, to warrent that if she looses interest I can still offer it a forever home, if it was her second pony then I would obviously be willing to pay a lot more.

I thought we had one today, stunning, but it has all gone wrong due to ill health :(

I am really going grey now

Honestly, keep looking!
I was looking for what seemed for forever until I found my boy.
I suppose you're looking for a bit of a 'been there, done that, got the rossette and T'shirt' kind of pony!

Whereabouts are you based, I know down here even good lead rein ponies cost 1000+, ive got a lead rein pony out on loan which there going to sort out buying at the end of the contract (february) and there giving me 1200!!! Im based in Berkshire so it may be cheaper where you are. There are loan ponies out there but often there loaned before there advertised as there so few and far between.
Its really hard ive been there last year finding a first ridden for my daughter on loan took 6 months and it was a nightmare people lied, in the end i compimsed, i got a 6 year old with not as much show experience as i would have liked but he is perfectly behaved and nothing phased him, so hes taken to shows like a duck on water in fact i think hes better there than at home. You might find some start appearing now spring is coming and people decide they need the next size up.

Get rid of other half,....... seems reasonable.

He is my main barrier. I find THEEE perfect pony but daughter fell off, so a deff no no for him, does he think she will stay on for the rest of her life???? lesson learned, I will no longer let him see her ride. BTW was neither the pony or daughters fault that she came off, and she was not even bothered

Hang on in there! You will find one, it just takes time! Have you tried local riding schools, advertising online or putting an advert in your local horsey magazine if you have one?

Have tried a few websites and adverts.

Just get worried as the one I love the sound of is waaayyy beyond my means but they seem to want to accept any price.

It just sounds warning bells, would go and have a look, but my car is off the road, and a fair way off, and I know I would fall in love, and I hope I have more about me than to do that!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have bought my son 2 ponies, a leadrein and a first ridden and did not pay that much for either of them. Both were brilliant for their job, we have kept the LR pony and when I sold the 1st ridden (my son has lost interest - playing rugby instead ) he was bought by the first person who saw him. The ponies are out there, don't give up it just takes time, we looked at loads of unsuitables when looking for a first ridden pony - he was hiding in a back garden the whole time lol. Good luck & keep looking - he is out there just waiting for you to find him. Lots of people are taking less than they are advertising for - it is a buyers market at the mo.

The perfect pony is out there waiting for you and when you do you will think that everything that has been put in your path was done for a reason and fate has stepped in :)
I definitely felt like this when I finally found my old lad.

The main thing is temprement. If that is right does it matter if its old , wrong colour, wrong age, even if it won't pass the vet?
If you want a bargin first pony you will not get a beautifull 8 year old with 4 whites and a blaze, and a saint for £700. But you might get a saint who is 24 and grey with a minor health problem.

Dont give up yet the right one might be just around the corner. Thats what happened to me, we bought an 18 yr old pony who was brilliant but she turned out to be nearer mid 20s. We still bought her and she gave my daughter the best experience ever. SHe was brilliant once D2 outgrew her and I put her out on loan to two young children of 3 and 6 yr and she gave them the same confidence. There mother picked her after a piece of tarp blew over towards her and she didn't move!
One will come up and you wont look back but please dont rule out an oldie.

any good?

Basil, 12.2hh Ride and Drive
Basil is a lovely bomb proof, coloured, 12.2hh pony. Previous owners said he drives but we haven't tried him.
My 4 year old little girl rides him on lead rein but will not tank off if let loose if the rider can steer and stop him.
He has done pony club and can jump a little jump.
