Hi,
I've sold my lad and he leaves next weekend to a wonderful new home...

I'm on a really nice yard and have been for about 6 years, I've had my ups and downs like most people, fair share of "debates" but on the whole I've loved being on that yard, the people and the YO has been great.

The YO has been very supportive at times and even when i lost my last horse 2 years ago to Laminitis he paid and arranged for the disposal as he knew i was going though my insurance and couldn't afford to pay him until they had paid out.

When times have got hard, I've missed a few months livery payments, but as long as you are honest with him and explain why, he allows you to pay when you can...not saying he does this for everyone!!!

When i get my money for my horse next weekend I'll be giving him the rent i owe out of the cash, but i also wanted to get him a gift.

I don't want to leave under a cloud as if i ever get another horse i would like to back to that yard. I'll also be visiting friends etc.

What's the usual gift, a card, box of chocs and a bunch of flowers? As he's been so wonderful over the years a bottle of drinky poos as well? I was also thinking of getting a few boxes of cakes for the brew room, for people to share?

All this bearing in mind that the reason I've sold my horse is due to lack of funds!!!

I've also got loads of stuff to sell like buckets, haynets, forks, grooming kit etc...stable stuff as all of my horses stuff like tack and rugs are going with him to his new home. Do you think i should offer all of these bits to his new owner or sell them on the yard? I was thinking of having a "Stable Sale", everything a pound?!!?

The Stable sale sounds like a great idea you can then buy a nice bottle of whisky say for the YO and some cakes for the Brew room out of the proceeds.

Rather than a bunch of flowers how about a pot planted up with some nice spring flowers for the yard?

I think its always nice to show your apprieciation to a YO who's been great. A bottle of something would be nice along with a thank you card. Like Chavhorse's idea of a pot of spring flowers.
Stable sale is a good idea too. When I left my last yard, I just had a few bits which I left in the tack room, ie, feed scoops, saddle pads etc with a note for people to help themselves. They went within an hour and someone left a nice thank you.
Leaving a clean stable and paddock is always appreciated too, surprising how many people don't, and as you say, you never know when you may come back.
You don't need to spend much, but thoughtfulness goes a long way, doesn't it ?

I think he'd appreciate a bottle of something, that's a nice gesture. If you are possibly going to have a horse in the future why not hold on to your stable stuff? It will cost a lot to replace it all again.

Thanks guys...a bottle of something and some chocs i think is a cunning plan.

lack of storage causes a problem with keeping all the bits and bobs...also new horse, new stuff!!! :D

why don't you put what you said in your post into a nice letter for him as well? when my mum got sick we got loads of cards that just said 'get well', the cards that were nicest where ones where people put details into it it like 'thanks for the time you helped me with x and y, i had been a bit lost and your encouragement helped me at the time'. it really made us appreciate how mums actions had helped others. sometimes people like to be reminded of specific times they acted nicely or well, and realise that people really appreciated it. its a lovely idea to get him a present - good yo's are hard to find!
