Hey guys,

Red has been coughing a dry cough for about 4 days now. Last night he came in with one of his glands (under his head behind cheek bones) up but only one of them and he has lumps allover him like an allergy.

Anyone have any ideas, a few of the horses are coughing but i just put it down to a virus, we have had a few this year.

Could do with your input before i call the vet.

Is there anything i can do? He is still eating and trotting off when i put him out on a morning, but he was a bit on the quiet side for him last night.

Any advice or help would be appreciated

Thanks

Mel xx

Could be some sort of low grade virus. However, with the amount of strangles around at the moment I'd be inclined to give the vet a buzz for some advice.

Several of our horses are coughing, and several have glands up just behind their jawbones. Marius has, in addition, a huge lump under his jaw, which I am assuming is a gland as well.
I think it's that blasted rape.

Marius came up in hives all over for a week last summer, too, which was obviously an allergy. I am waiting for him to do the same this year.
I have not had the vet out for any of this, and he has been fine. I cannot say what's wrong with your horse, but this is what is happening to ours.

Thanks for the advice, its the lump im worried about because its a bit sore to touch but its bound to be if its a gland!

I put brand new shavings on his bed last night for the first time in a while, gutted his stable so i was thinking it might be a reaction to something in those

Probably a respiratory virus as you suspect. Monitor his temperature and watch him for worsening of his condition, difficulty breathing etc. Do not work him while he's coughing, and give him one week off for every day he has a high temperature so as not to cause permanent damage to his lungs.
Hope he feels better soon!
