Glasgow horsey shopping?

As said above, Jet Set probably the best, but not close to Glasgow.

Sports Direct in Argyle Street have a very limited amount of riding gear on the 4th floor as Robinsons were bought by them. By limited, I mean a few t/o and stable rugs, headcollars, bridles (only cheap own brand plus Micklem) and a few odds and ends such as brushing boots, numnahs and bits. More human riding kit than horse.

Yup it a massive agricultural show that takes you at least 2 days to walk round and a 3rd day for shopping and even then you will still miss stuff! It is the highlight of many farmers and equestrians year up here!

Saying that I didn't go to the Highland at all last year for the first time in nearly 20 years!

They’re used to be more. There used to be Jetset in Milngavie then it got taken over by Equi Store which was good too. Now that’s away.

My fix when I was a wee girl before I had even been up close to a horse was Crockets in the city centre. Used to love going to look at all the stuff and loved the smell of tack!

Second the highland show, it’s fab!

Probably a daft question, but where do horsey people around there get their lovely tack shop fix?

all online-I do have a large agricultural store near me that carries a lot of stuff bit not much in the way of tack, different makes of hats, BPs etc. And the RHS is ok if you can be bothered but its £30 and a lot of hassle to get to. I shop online and make sure they have a good return policy! Horsey life is not the same as when I was down south where you had a huge choice of yards/shops/competition venues/instructors etc locally.

The horse is on a yard near Larkhall so I'm down there most days anyway.

Yeah, I forgot about Decathlon in Braehead. I've bought riding trousers there, but their horse stuff, like their mountaineering stuff, is okay but not life changing.

Is (was) that the one next to Dobbies, Boclair Road? I didn't know that had closed. I remember the old Stirlingshire Saddlery tack shop that used to be there, many years ago.

Yes. A few years ago now I think. They were saying the rent for the shop was extortionate and it was time to give it up. Stirlingshire used to be a good one too, I think there’s a saddlers at the market now in Stirling?

Central Saddlery in Falkirk is good too but not in Glasgow. My saddle fitter has opened up a shop in Paisley, not sure if it’s just leather stuff she sells though.

I used to love central saddlery! It was such an Aladdins cave of stuff! I went in there about 8 months ago and there is very little in there now and what is there is the top of the range, expensive stuff that you wouldn't dare wear near a horse because of the price tag!

Sadly most of the shops have gone. Stirlingshire is at the action mart at Stirling, I've heard positives about A2B as well. Millbrae don't do retail anymore and Equistore closed. Ayr Equestrian, First Choice and Jet Set are really the only ones now with Jet Set being the biggest. It's sad, in years gone by there was Stirlingshire at Buchlylvie before it moved to Milngavie and although not the same there was Derby House near St George's Cross.

As others have said the Highland or at events were our main shopping opportunities, now it has to be online unless it's basic stuff from the feed merchants. I used to love trips South and stopping off at Derby House when it was independent and in a lovely old ramshackle building, initially when it was taken over and moved it was good but slipped pretty quickly :(

I think I was spoiled as a big day out for me as a kid was to go to Brandon Saddlery -mum would part ex my grown out of stuff for bigger stuff and it had everything and then some.

Even the tack/feed shops around Edinburgh like the Drum and Harbro (was Millers) don't hold nearly as much stock as they used to. the chap at First Choice in Larkhall has done a great job of building that business up, I use him when I can but he's kind of in the wrong direction for me.

Yes have used first choice but it’s a bit out the way for me for a visit. They do good deals on bedding and things though. I think they have a ‘September weekend’ sale.
