I have been wearing glases everyday for the last 4 years or so, and have fallen off 3 times in that period, wearing glasses riding doesnt bother me but blimey one of the 3 times i have fallen off was last night... jumped a jump and it was one of those "pear shaped" moments, bit fast and exciteable, took off a touch too far away, chipped the pole and knocked it down and it got a bit inbetween her legs so she stumbled a little on landing - head down, i lost balance, out the side door i went, i seemed to use my arms/side of face as a handbrake into the grass - how pleasant.

My glasses are totally messed up, all bent out of shape and dug into my nose making a small cut and produced a suprising amount of blood!

People often say to me surely its dangerous riding with your glasses on (surely more so withouth as i am blind as a bat!) but i have to say with my nose a little sore and swollen - i am a little more swayed towards getting laser surgery in the future now

Hi there,

I'm exactly the same, I cant even see the time on our clock radio which is on my side of the bed without me specs! Anyway I usually ride in contact lenses and find them fine, have you tried contact lenses at all?

Hope your nose feels better soon!

Luv Jayne xx

I so badly WANT to be able to do contacts - but am very weird about eyes. my very patient opticians (god love him) has put up with me passing out and actually being sick in his office bin when it came to taking them out!! can get them in just cant get them out. So very frustrating !!!!

I got contacts coz I hated the idea of going XC with glasses. I am a total freak about my eyes (even hated having glasses on as they were too close to my eyes!) I got contacts and hated getting them in and out...I remember just after I got them I went to do schools showjumping and it took me over an hour to get them in...but so glad I stuck at it now - totally worth it!

When taking them out mostt people pull them down to the sides - I never could so I pinch the sides together and they pop out now...give that a go?? xxx

My dad offered to get me laser surgery as a present....love the idea, scared it'll go wrong lol. Was it really painful? How long did it take to heal?? Thanks xx

i wear glasses..i used to find that my circular glasses used to steam up extremly quickly......i changed them to squarer frames which helps...

i do have contacts but i dont tend to wear them...i have an astigmatism in my right eye so everyso often the focus adjusts......

i think its specsavers who do a flexible framed set of glasses...that might help!!

Have two pairs of glasses, I think you can get google type sports glasses that are safer that regular specs for riding, and and ordinary pair of specs for everything else. Contacts are fine as long as there's no dust around - if there is, it's highly unpleasant and you can't exactly stop to do anything about it.

You're right LO, you can get those goggle type glasses for sports though I bet they aren't cheap! I'm short sighted so I too am blind as a bat without my specs for long distance stuff though I can smugly sit and read for hours, spec-less! I can't wear contacts so cope with the distance vision stuff by only riding out with trusted friends who make sure I don't get lost! Occasionally, I DO wear my specs out riding but it usually rains and then you need a teeny set of windscreen wipers or you can't even see the horse in front!

I wear glasses and with out them cant see bugger all

I cant have laser eye surgery its something to do with the bulge in my eye so had to resort to wearing contacts! I was such an idiot with them and its taken me 6 months to get a grip with them but finally I can use them yay

I'd keep trying!

The actual surgery was completely painless and nothing to worry about. The bit I found painful was about half hour afterwards when the stuff wears off it started to hurt like someone was poking you in the eye. No-one told me it would hurt as much as that so I was freaking out it gone wrong PLUS we didn't have any painkillers so had to suffer until OH got some. But that bit only lasted about 5 hours and it wasn't that bad honest. I do it again in a heart beat but my tip would be to take painkillers as soon as you leave the place to go home. My auntie-in-law had hers done the week after me, I told her to take painkillers and she was fine.

Haha i have the same prob, expecially when i have a lesson in the heat, my face tends to sweat a little (sorry sounds gross) and my glasses slip down. Hate contacts only wear them when needed cos i find them irriating. My brother has lasor correction too siad its money well spent - but i prefer me with glasses so i'll have to deal with it. I'm very short sighted cant see nothing without them - i even wear them swimming! When it rains and im out on hack i just keep my head down, but how annoying is it when they all steam up, i end up wiping them which makes it worse cos they go all smearey! Sorry not much help am i.

That's interesting to hear about laser surgery. I wear glasses during the day for work but always wear my contact lenses for riding. I was always scared of getting hurt if I wore my glasses when riding.

I have been thinking about eye surgury for a little while. Are there many that 'go wrong'? How can it go wrong, does anyone know? Not nice to think about, but I'd like to know all the facts first!!

I had laser just over a year ago. My consultant said that he "Going wrong" part is all blown out of proportion and he has never heard of anybody going blind or anything. The worst thing that can happen is it doesnt take as well as needed and would have o be re-done (for free) a few months down the line.

WELL worth it!!

i wear glasses and am blind as a bat with out them. now ride in contact lens and have never looked back. can't afford laser at the mo, as a student, but hopefully in the future. I used to have those bendy glasses but after a couple of falls they went the same way as my other glasses but worse. i used to be really funny about my eyes too, but now no problem just stick at it.

get the glasses with plastic lenses and flexy metal frames. (metal with memory)

I ride in my flexi metal pair, ive had horrific falls in them (ended up under a horse once). had a car crash with them where airbags were used and ive never had a problem with them being forced into my face or damaging my nose. They just flex. The plastic lenses mean that should you damage the lense you will not have sharp glass near your eyes.
For shows i ride in contact lenses.

Contacts for me too..won't ride without them as I don't feel safe in glasses

Ditto

Having several opticians in my family (who are not actually MY optician) I have been advised very strongly against laser surgery. I have always had a 'fear' of eyes and didn't think for one moment I could wear contacts. However, I have now been wearing them for about twenty years.
If you can't/don't want to wear contacts, I'd recommend you go with plastic lenses and flexi frames.
