Right, I need a good glucosmaine suppliment for my boy. he's on new market but tbh its so expensive i can't keep buying it! feel so bad, wondered if anyone had any ideas on cheaper alternative still with a high level of glucosamine in it? i've looked at cortaflex and at equine america glucosamine plus msm but not sure how good they are. All opinions welcome (also posted in veterinary)

Thanks

We have our 16.2hh IDxTB mare on Cortaflex - she definitely keeps on it well :) with cortaflex, its because each glucosamine molecule is much smaller than the stuff made naturally so its easier to absorb by the body. (I recently did a uni essay on Cortaflex!) it helps maintain and build new cartilage.
It is expensive - the alternative is human glucosamine tablets in the feed we have done that before and it work as well, but much cheaper!!! :)

I use the glucosamine by EA too as my mare is only 8 so I just feed it for maintenance (she is not stiff etc) and it does the job well....only £15 a go and is the same size as the standard cortaflex and other names. I will move onto a more specialised joint supplement when she gets a bit older :)

the cortaflex we use I think is about 30 quid (not much cheaper I know) and lasts about 2 months (2 scoops a day for a 16.2hh mare)
human glucosamine tablets work just as well though ;) I'm sure you can even buy powdered form of human tablets and we just gave our other mare one tab a day when she was on them

I cant recomend this stuff enough and lasts ages had fantastic results with my mare

Agree with above - it is amazing stuff. I took my 21 yr old ex racer to the vet the other day for investigation into swelling in the fetlock. He had loads of x-rays, and the vet and myself were amazed that he has absolutely NO arthritis in the fetlock/pastern/hoof area, whatsoever and he was very heavily raced over national hunt fences. This supplement is the only explanation I can think of.

ditto started by 18yo boy on the suppleaze gold 3 months ago when was having proper stiffness on one side, not unsound but having canter issues. He feels completely different now and when I did some calculations it doesn't work out too pricey.

I use the Equine America Glucosamine and it works well. I got told to only use the supplements that have 'Glucosamine HCI' in as this is the real form and not substituted or concentrated.

My pony has Cortaflex, a £60 tub lasts 4 months. However I am not sure about continuing its use. I work in human orthapaedic research and it has recently come to light that glucosamine has a placebo effect on people, they feel better because they think taking it helps but it actually does nothing! Now I've been telling pony how great it is but don't think it will work to the same effect!
