my pony went down with laminitis 3 mths ago & has been on box rest since. Had x rays etc which were all good and he has been allowed to walk in school for 10 mins every day for past 2 wks( he was looking amazing in school ). Had a glucose feed last week of which he ate prob about a 1/3 of and results came back as normal.I was assured this feed would not tip the balance but since having it he has had swellings above his eyes and been a little footy with pulses . Seems odd !!! Any one else had this

Glucose is sugar. I don't understand what you mean by glucose feed? Is this what a vet advised you to do? Is this an after test for laminitis? Sorry am very curious as to how these conditions are treated and managed and as I have only been taking an interest recently this is new to me. Hope your pony is ok though!

Sounds like a Glucose loading test for Insulin Resistance!

Did the vet take a starved ACTH/Insulin/Glucose test prior to this?

If not, I would ask for this - it would require the vet to take blood before the horse has breakfast (fine to have their night hay the night before) and then straight off to the lab! Get him tested for Cushings and EMS!

Fat pads above eyes, footiness and pulses sounds like he has something metabolic going on!

It is a test for insulin resistance but a very risky one. My lami prone pony was crippled by a scoop of happy hoof - so imagine what a glucose feed would do. It's not a test I would be using on my pony

yes had no hay after 7pm the night before .my vet thought he was prob metabolic .his original test came back 19.3 and the cut off point is 20 so he was very close to it hence the glucose feed which he prob ate a third of/vets said this would be enough and he came back 19.3 again .i needed to know if he was metabolic as to how to proceed /medication etc

Don't want to hi-jack thread but I'm really interested in this and wonder if anyone can tell me if the starved insulin glucose test alone is enough to determine whether a pony has EMS? (ie withough having to do the glucose feed)?

Would like to have my lami-prone pony tested for this (doesn't have any Cushings symptoms and isn't really old enough either so not really thinking about ACTH test but wonder if he might have EMS and so would like glucose / insulin test). He's been fine (touch wood) for ages now but he's managed really strictly. Would just like to know.

Vet says it would have to be glucose feed test after being starved all night. I raised concerns about giving a laminitic a load of glucose but was assured it wasn't a risk. If, however, there's another less risky way, I'd be happier with that. Anyone know?

OP- How is your pony?

So what do you feed your pony?

Being as it has the Laminitis Trust stamp, you'd have thought it would be ok!

my pony is doing reasonably well. he is happy to stomp about on the yard and enjoying walking in the school. His back end looks much better as he is using it properly now without rocking back but still doing the basil fawlty walk in front. Horror of horrors he is due a set of shoes in 2 weeks which i am dreading...think i will danillion him in preparation as it really knocked him back last time. with regard to the glucose feed i was assured it wouldn't affect him as it's glucose not fructose !! but it def seemed to....i have put him on blue chip lami light which he and i are very impressed with and looking on the bright side.:)
