I am having an insatiable urge to get some pygmy goats but would appreciate some advice from people who have them already. I have done some research so have a grasp of basic maintenance needs etc but would like to hear the 'inside' story from those in know.... am I mad or are they a lovely addition to the family (we have horses, rabbits, chickens etc at home already so used to the constant attention!)

thanking you!

Un-fixed males smell. A LOT. STEER CLEAR!

At approx 18" high they really aren't suitable for companions to big horses, one kick and they are curry(there is always the exception to that rule of course, my old Tb LOVED his goat)
They don't like the rain, they sometimes don't like dogs, people or each other. They are quite capable of hurting dogs, people, each other and horses if they butt - one of mine lamed my mini.
They can be noisy, especially if they feel they are being hard done by (ie, you are 2 minutes late for morning role call)
They can, and will, escape when they feel like it.
They prefer to eat clover, grass, tips of vegetables and flower gardens, cabbage (etc) can gives them bloat.
They get into, onto, and under everything that isn't nailed up, down or shut.
Everything they do is on their terms.

Brilliant little creatures, I love goats, whatever shape or size they come in, mine frustrates the hell out of me at times but he always makes me smile.

Go and get some.

I love goats, don't have any experience with them, but they are on the list once we move this summer and have some space (along with the horses at home, chickens, more cats, dogs, rabbits.........). Go for it and let me know how you get on!
