I'm getting a goat soon and it's gonna live up at the field with the horses. So, who has a goat or tips for me??? Thanks

At my old work we used to get 15 (ringed) boys a year at a few days old and hand rear, they were only £5/10 a time. Mostly they'd go on for meat at 6-7 months but we kept a few.

This was mine :D

I absolutely love goats, though they are a pain in the bum at times.

Goats love being scratched around their ears/horns area.

They love eating horses' tails, rugs, headcollars, etc.

They also eat anything else within reach, and I mean ANYTHING.

They can climb.

They can jump.

You will need proper stock fencing, with posts on the outside.

Prepare to be very frustrated when they ruin stuff by chewing/eating it.

Prepare to be mesmerised by their characters, they are SUCH good fun!!!

Haha, thanks. They sound like they add character to the yard:) Much like shetlands! I think every yard should have a goat and a shetland!!!:D

Aww, it's cute. I can't believe you sent some of them for meat though:eek: I could never do that!

Well they had 6 or 7 months of being well looked after and loved, which is 6 or 7 months more than the vast majority of boy goats get ;) I'm a long term veggie by choice but am very pro ethical farming, after all no farming = no cute little goats. Sure they could have been 'put down' at birth like all the others, but is that any better?

I have one, was going to pop it out with my girl and a kid... OH has put his foot down, so still on farm :(

Be really careful on poisonous plants, ours will have one mouthful of something practically invisible and it's a night down the vets (travelling pet farm). I'd always go Golden Guernseys (very cuddly and will follow you around the field for attention). They are a rare breed so can be pricier but if you buy girls that can't be bred from they're fairly cheap and the boys aren't too expensive.
