Should you use a neck strap or grab a large chunk of mane when unbalanced when jumping , some people do not want to as they say it makes them look , not as proficient as they would like to think they are ??? i am not a very confident jumper and will do anything not to catch my horses precious mouths

There is nothing wrong with using a neck strap - however better still would be to have a few more lessons before embarking on jumping to stabilise your seat and gain truly independent hands

lots of practise, particularly the 2-point seat while trotting and cantering, really helps. you need to be able to do that "floating seat" and keep your balance, with your bum out of the saddle and the angles of your knees and ankles closed up more than usual. then you just fold a bit for the fence, and keep everything else the same.
the mane's by far the best thing to grab... there's lots to aim for, and it always goes where the horse is going! has saved me a number of times... i'd rather do that than risk socking the poor horse in the chops and putting him off his jumping, definitely.

thanks ma hen , i had a very serious riding accident3 years ago , i lost my confidence , i have now started having lessons just to improve my lower leg security and to get back my once soft independent hands , fear and age are not a good combination though

hi kerilli thanks for the advice i will take it on board , the problem is that my horse who is I.D.T 18 hands and not too slim , stumbled , i went overboard he flipped and rolled his body over my top half , i had fractured jaw, arm and cervical spine 2 black eyes all the skin off my back soft tissue damage that took 18 months to repair , i should have been dead , but instead silly bugger me got on him after 5 weeks and he bleedin tripped and i fell off ( god did that hurt ) sorry to ramble but i am trying but perhaps i should jusy get a new brain and take up knitting !!!

Scifi - god you must be tough but DO NOT take up knitting! Or if you must, knit horse rugs and haynets and riding sweaters! You may ache all the time, bits of you may feel like they need replacing and your friends may tell you that you are completely mad but neds keep us young. Or young at heart anyway!
