One time I had to get off, I was walking along looking for a suitable place when someone stopped and after establishing I was OK, ordered her huge son out of the car to give me a leg up.

That would've been useful! I was out with two of my liveries, and the male one did offer to give me a leg up - but he's not exactly strapping, and I had horrible visions of crippling the poor guy! I pretended not to hear him!

My 5'2" sister ( ex racing ) , in her 50's , could vault onto her 17hh horse ( also ex racing } with or without a saddle . He would also lower his head to the floor whilst she straddled his neck and he would then lift his head , lifting her up so that she could slide/wriggle down onto his back . She used to dismount by either sliding backwards over his quarters or by grabbing hold of a beam as they went under the dovecote at the entrance to the yard , dangling in space whilst the horse continued walking , and then dropping to the floor and meeting him at his stable .
She wasn't a great one for H&S .
