my horse has some random injury that has baffled both my vet and a specialist, i wontgo into too much detail but we are looking at some sort of SI injury, most likely muscle strain or ligament injury. the vets are not sure but prescribed 2 months box rest and 1 month field rest. i had a physio and a chiro out who have spoken to my vets and said they couldn't really give a good explanation as to why box rest is needed and they both think he'd be better off turned out in a small paddock so he can move around a bit. i was going to give him off till spring anyway so they say turn him out in a small paddock till then?? i'm not sure what to do. i'm 3 weeks into box rest at present...help

mmmmm hard one this - i have utmost reapect for my vet Liz as she would have a horse on field rest rather than box rest, like you said they keep mobile and less chance of over problems occurring . My theory is if not really ness than turn out in controlled enviroment ie small paddock is better than box rest than a manic horse. personally i would try field rest( even if only part of day) and see how horse goes ie does condition worsen - I could never box rest my mare she would be manic given her past

i will speak to the vets and to be fair to them i dont know whether he'd have a problem with him being in a small paddock as the box rest was more of a try it and see type of thing. he's coped okay but now looks very depressed and i cant walk him out anymore as he has started rearing.

Yep I agree, I would have very controlled turnout to start is a very small area and enlarge it bit by bit as time goes on. I don't like the thought of them being stuck in a tiny box 24/7 if there is a way around it, perhaps speak to your vet about it first if you would be happier

Urm this is a difficult one, I can't stand the idea of ponio being stuck in his stable for days let alone weeks or months, but then again I know he's a bugger in the field and is liable to do himself more injury
luckily we have a crew yard, that we can put gates on and has mangers in for the cows and a water trough so he can wander when he wants or just stand there nibbling his hay. I think you just have to know your horse and whats best for him/her. good luck x

another thought if only turn out a few hours a day try to split this in a session in morning and then in afternoon just breaks day up for him - i know box rest is needed sometimes but often you end up with a manic stressed horse that goes loopy when finaly turned out - controlled quite turnout on regular basis is better for most conditions
