My wonderful OH has surprised me with a trip to Vegas on Tuesday. He went out of his way to make sure all the pets, including the horse, had arrangements in place before he booked anything. So far so wonderful! But... I've never left my wee chi dog before and i am lying here feeling tearful at the thought. He is going to my sister who i trust more than anyone in the world but she has two boisterous little cavaliers and a baby so a much more riotous house than my wee one is used to. He is lying beside me now with his head on my shoulder like every morning and i wish i could explain to him why we are going and when we will be back for him.
Any tips for coping with leaving your little darling for the first time?

What a thoughtful OH you have, a lovely surprise.

I wouldn't worry too much about your little Chihuahua, remember he is still a dog and I sure he'll give as good as he gets, when he's with your sister's dogs. He might find it great fun and really enjoy it. I take it he's been introduced to them already? If not, I'd be inclined to meet up with your sister and her dogs, in a local park, and introduce there, then return with all dogs to sister house. See how it goes indoors. If Chi is very worried by your sister's dogs, just make sure he has somewhere to go, out of the their way, ie. access to his own bed/cage (leaving door open). I'm sure it'll be fine.

That's very sound advice from chillipup - honestly, he will be fine :) I nearly cried when I left my lot to go on holiday, I got back and they hadn't missed me at all :p :D

Aww how lovely of your OH !

I take it he will be taking his own bed/toys/cage (if you have one) if so make sure your sis puts it in a quiet place away from the others so he can have his space if need bel I'm sure he will be fine and TBH its best he learns to be away from you as this may happen again in the future.

How kind of your sis and so much better than putting him in kennels .

He will be fine - Enjoy !! Love Las Vegas it's unreal but fab !!

Thank you all so much. I am just back from doing as Chillipup suggested - a lovely walk in the park and a visit to my sister's house. They have met before several times but it has really calmed my nerves to see them running about happily together :) he'll be fine... Gulp.
And it was lovely of OH I know. I'll try hard not to bubble and put a dampner on it!

Ummm perhaps I shouldn't say this, but after nearly blubbing in the airport car park.... and on the transfer bus to the airport.... I found that alcohol helped with stopping those tendencies before I got to the departure gate!
