My mare has recently tore her ddft which is resulting in a lot of box rest time /off work. She is having her shoes off Thursday and then is in for three weeks complete box rest then starting 5 mins in hand walking per day, her hooves aren't horrendous but she probably will get foot sore when starting the five mins walking etc.

She is currently fed herbi chaff, fibrebeet, garlic, oats and barley with the odd scoop of speedibeet when she has been worked hard.

How will I be best to stop her getting to foot sore? Fortunately thein hand walking increases gradually so I'm hoping she adjusts but the vets recommended to take the shoes off firstly to save money and secondly apparently it's move successfull in supporting the ddft than a wedge shoe. I a. Keen for a good and quick recovery as she is a competition horse.

I had a racehorse in for box rest last October, with some walking in hand before he was turned away for the tendon injury to fully heal. He came to me with no shoes on having been in for a while, his feet were awful, flat, the frogs were almost eaten away with thrush and I was concerned with how much they could improve in the time he was in, bearing in mind he then had to go out 24/7 in the wettest muddy winter we have had.

I posted for advice and changed his diet, which I had planned anyway, he was on ad lib haylage, fast fibre, magnitude, brewers yeast, salt and a little linseed. I walked him each day on the roughest parts of the yard as well as on concrete, I picked them out and scrubbed every day before and after walking, they improved beyond my expectations, after 7 weeks they were concave, his frogs had become strong and firm, he went out and they have remained in good shape despite being in the mud almost constantly.
Get him on a suitable diet and it really will help, the better her feet the more support offered to the damaged tendon and a better chance of full recovery.

Thanks for your reply I will do all of that and add some brewers yeast and linseed into her feed. It will do her some good having a break from them anyway she was an exracer and as far as I know she will have been shod for the last 10 years. I hope hers come nice as quickly as your horses did
