My boy is getting flecks of grey hair on his back where the saddle panels for. I use a master saddler and his saddle has been checked this year. Would you say it's definitely back damage or could it be anything else?

Oh right I did think saddle but I have only recently noticed it and he hasn't been ridden in weeks now. Very odd, he hasn't got the strongest of backs anyway but just don't know why saddle would be an issue now when he has had it checked this year and he hasn't changed shape.

I have just had this too. my saddle is new and fitted by a master saddler 3 weeks ago. he has a small patch of grey on the withers and flecks of grey appearing around the saddle area. i rang saddler for advice he was adament it was not consistent with saddle rubbing. he said winter coat coming through and the grey is from either excessive sweating or previous damage. it has come on very suddenly so i kinda believe what he says!

i have been worried by it, but i think he has settled my mind now.

This happened to my horse years ago at approx 5/6 years old. I freaked out (first horse so I was a little OTT) I assumed it was from the saddle and he'd have nasty white patches forever. The next change of coat and it was gone. Still at the age of 22 it hasn't returned. I have no idea what caused it

Mine has just developed these, I was advised it's coming through with his winter coat. Bear in mind that it'll be a reflection of something that happened some time ago (hair doesn't just go white overnight) so changes in muscle and physique may mean it's no longer an issue (or possibly that it's even more of one!)
